Question regarding Ludwig wraps and seams Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

Loading...

I recently picked up a pair of matching (same wrap) '60s 8x12 3-ply Ludwig toms taken from the same kit. Each one has some "unique" characteristics:

The first tom has the wrap tucked into the shell yet the seam is not lined up under the lugs. A keystone badge and tone control are installed on the shell, yet it's obvious that the badge grommet has been tampered with (removed and replaced?).

The second tom also has the wrap tucked into the shell but the seam is lined up under the lugs. Holes have been drilled for both a badge and tone control, yet neither are currently present on the drum. When viewed from the exterior, the holes drilled for the tone control are visible but the hole for the badge is actually covered by the wrap.

Originally, I simply assumed that both were re-wraps. At the same time, I've never seen re-wraps with the wraps actually tucked into the shells. Just wondering whether any of you have?

ive never seen a rewrap that could be retucked. I have seen 60's factory wraps in which the seam or overlap is not under a lug however.

I haven't either, Mike, until this one came along. Very strange.

Could you post pics of the wrap tucked inside the seam? I'd be curious to see if someone went so far for a restoration that they opened up a ply and tucked the wrap.

I don't see the new wrap as being tucked under the last ply. I see the original wrap in the last ply, but it looks to me like they just did a pretty good job of butting the new wrap to the original and then lapping the seam. (Especially in picture 3. You can see the edge of the new wrap.)

Boy, it's hard to tell just what the heck is going on in some of those pics. In a couple shots, it appears both ends of the rewrap are overlapping on the outside of the shell, under the lug, right where the old tucked wrap would be surfacing. Reflections on the wrap seem to show some orange peel texturing, so we definitely have a rewrap, but it doesn't appear that the new wrap has been inserted into the ply. Just my guess.

I see a rewrap job as the wrap overlaps itself. When you rewrap one of these drums you have to cut the original wrap at the point where it enters the shell so the part of the wrap inside the shell stays there. Then the best way to proceed is to butt the edge of the new wrap to that shell seam. To my eye it looks like that is what they did here.
