My First Slingys!!! Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

I'm so excited I could spit... Here's the lowdown.

I drove 4 hrs to get what looked like a Stage Band kit from ? year. I posted questions in a thread titled, Are these really Slingerlands, and was encouraged by the feedback. You can check out the seller's photos in that thread.

Made the 4 hr drive and got the kit. Overpaid maybe, at $450, but I could afford it and have been wanting a Slingerland kit since buying my first '66 Star. For what I play, I prefer the 20/12/14 setup over larger drums and can't wait to hear the 14x5.5, matching snare! I'm not sure what to make of some aspects of this kit and have taken many photos of all drums.

Snare and Bass definitely look alike and have the same stamp in them ending in 65. Snare and Bass pics here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/apvmiv03evuducn/eJFzSysSrC They are both faded exactly the same...and I like the tangerine color a lot:)

Toms are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/khhpvtrv3cjkh43/G_516Vwx6I

It looks like they were rewrapped. Ft has a Jan 17, 1966 date stamp, but no vent hole for a badge. Leg mounts look to be missing pieces. Rt looks like it was a concert tom that was converted. interior is painted and there look to be professionally filled lug holes just under the top re-ring. there's a vent hole that was covered with the wrap. All drums have stick saver hoops except the bottom of the rt.

I'm looking forward to getting this kit fixed up, looking shiny and sparkly and sounding great.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have on dates, renovation 1st steps, etc...

Brian, The floor tom leg mounts look to be the spring loaded leg mounts. the mounted tom is a converted concert tom, the lugs then moved to the center lug stage band configuration as you stated, The floor tom I would need more pics to describe it. Does the wrap match on all the drums ?

Thanks Vintagemore2000! Here are a bunch more shots of the floor tom & leg mount: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/iph4y0mprbkzvrb/Mf35mwhWYf

Was it common for folks to reconfigure concert toms like this? Would it have been a similar age to the FT, so I could look for a replacement badge?

Thanks again for your expert input. I'd like to do what I can to bring this kit back as much as possible.

Thanks again,

Brian

Nice acquisition. I really like that color.

Can you measure the original hole spacing in the mounted tom? That will help you know if it is indeed a Slingerland shell. It probably is though.

It is not unusual to convert concert toms into double headed toms. Usually that is done by adding a lower set of lugs and cutting a bottom bearing edge if there is not one already. A lot of the earlier concert toms had a bottom edge and in the case of Slingerland, this edge was protected by a trim ring. Converting a concert tom to a center lug tom is less common and, as you can see, required more effort.

I really like Slingerland drums and I am also quite fond of stick saver hoops. Enjoy!!

Slingerland concert toms had bottom bearing edges, The push button floor tom leg brackets are a major pain the springs get compressed over time and loose their holding power. just replace them with later slingerland t handle leg brackets.you can get aftermarket push buttons from Jim petty but they will cost you the same as just replacing the entire brackets.

So nobody can tell me about the matching stamps inside the bass & snare drums here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/apvmiv03evuducn/eJFzSysSrC

I've read most of the Slingerland articles and combed the catalogue pages but there is not much of the information I'm looking for.

Thanks.

Well the "P" just means Pearl or laminate finish for the shell (as opposed to a Natural stain)..

and the Feb -- is just the date stamp as you already know...

Should be a nice sounding set congrats..

Thank you, longjohn! I looked in the Slingerland articles and couldn't find those descriptions. Honestly, had I been patient enough in considering the other stamps I wold have noticed Feb for a month stamp.

Thanks again,

Brian
