Doesn't fit!BassDrum head needed.?

Hey,I need some drum head expertise!I just purchased an early('61,I think)Gretsch 3 piece set.It has a Peacock Sparkle finish which is so thick that a standard Remo type head does not fit the bass drum. They do fit easily on the ride Tom and snare. The bass drum resonant head is a nice Gretsch logo calfskin head.It appears that calfskin all the way around is not a good option(or,is it?)so what do I do and where do I look?

Try an Evans head. They are always a bit looser than Remos

I've had good results with Aquarian Modern Vintage heads on my 1961 Gretsch RB's.

Where Remo's wouldn't fit the 20" Bass drum, these ones slipped right on.

The Aquarian American Vintage series, was designed to be oversized, and to accomidate over sized drums, like 60's Gretsch, and older RK's.

I have an American vintage series on my 40's RK,that seats, tunes and sounds great.

The Modern Vintage series, was designed to give modern drums a more of a vintage sound.

Steve,

So that means only the American Vintage heads are oversized and the Modern Vintage are not?

I had to try out several heads from different manufacturers and only the Vintage Aquarians fitted but I'm absolutely sure they were Modern vintage with the rhombic logo.

Never tried the American Vintage.

The American vintage heads were designed to fit lots of oversized American drums, made before the late 50's,when calfskin heads were still in use.

The modern vintage heads are made to fit modern drums, which are slightly undersized, and to give them a vintage sound.

Lots of drummers "tucked" their own calf heads,so over sized shells weren't a problem. There was also a lack of uniformity .

Gretsch Permatone heads which were made by Remo, were oversized to fit Gretsch shells.

So ,now we're left with vintage oversized drums, and have to alter them

That's why Aquarian made the American vintage heads oversized.

If you check out Aquarians web site, they discribe the difference between the modern, and the vintage.

Hey Stedi - That logo came out pretty cool especially considering that it was done by hand! You missed your calling... you would have made an excellent (and highly paid) custom sign painter!

Cool reproduction of the old Gretsch logo.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Remo makes over-sized heads on a custom order basis. it is a 6 month time period that is the only draw back,

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Haha thanks John,...

I guess 6 years of art-school and the 2,5 hours of crappy bus-ride each day to get there, paid of somehow.

Highly paid job,.... where....where...?!
