Ludwig Super Sensitive... aaarrrrggghhh!

Okay y'all...

I have a Ludwig s/s/, that i cannot get adjusted. It's driving me nuts!

here's the deal. I bought some snares for it...overall length is 18 1/6th, snare solder to solder is 15 7/8. more or less.

I don't know what the deal is, but I canNOT loosen the snares enough! No matter what I do, I can't get them loose enough to drop completely when the snares are off. And it takes a screwdriver/lever to get the snares in.

I can't tell is the shell is bent, or what. I also noticed that the throw off tilts in slightly at the top. I've tried to adjust by installation of washers, etc., but I cannot fi it! Frustrating. Should I have different wires?

Are you sure you purchased the correct wires? Ludwig, Puresound and Gibraltar all make replacement wires for the Super Sensitive. A very common issue is that the mechanism, either one or both, is somehow out of whack. I'm currently getting ready to head out to dinner, so don't have the link that shows how to properly set up the SS. I'm sure others on our forum will chime in with the information.

I've got a really nice 70's SS that is in perfect mechanical condition, properly set up and sounding great!

Oh yeah, just remembered. To get the wires to lower properly, you'll need a reso head with a low collar. This basically means using a Ludwig head. Most other brands will have a higher collar and won't let the wires drop all the way.

oh, fer heaven's sake! It was the head!!! I put a Ludwig head on it, and it works just fine. You wouldn't believe the changes I've been thru with this thing.

A Ludwig head. Cripe.

What I find strange is that just about every single super sensitive I see on ebay has a lower head with the deep collar that will cause this issue.

I'm sure this affects enthusiasm about this drum and possibly drives the prices down..........which is cool since we know what time it is.

True! It was amazing how quickly this solution solved the problem. It was so irritiating! There was NO mechanical reason to explain this.

As it is, I have a world class snare at a darned good price. Plus parts, of course.

Bill can you post a picture of the difference between the 2 heads? Can you still buy those heads new from Ludwig? I'm thinking this might apply to some other snares where the throw off distance is limited? My Slingerland RK has a clamshell strainer and the throw off distance is maybe 1/8" if that. One of those heads might get me a little more clearance? TIA. :)
