Who makes the ultimate Jazz/Big Band ride cymbal?

Loading...

I have been looking for years for the ultimate Jazz/Big Band ride cymbal? I have tried many brands, sizes etc... only to not be happy with it when it's on my stand. I have seen and read that many drummers in past have used sizzle rides, but I have never tried one. Does anyone use a ride cymbal they are really happy with? Your input is greatly appreciated.

I have 18", 20", and 22" Zildjian rides, but my favorite for jazz is a very old 20" Krut sizzle ride (with rivets in only 3 of the 6 holes) It's thin, sensitive, and responds well to pp stick hits or brushes. Don't know if Krut was a quality cymbal for its time or not, and I don't know who made it, but for the soft jazz my quartet plays, it's great.

Interesting, I've seen the name before, but never actually heard the cymbals. Would you happen to have a sound file?

I seen this posting and had to respond..

about 3yrs back I came to the door of a young kid who was selling a complete set of Sab B8 cyms for an even $100/.

I needed them for a weekly open mic...

Well they just sold about an hr before I got there (I was on my way to the cottage and his place was 10mins out of my way)...!

As I turned to leave / I asked him if he had ANY other misc drum stuff /

stds/stxs etc...

His reply, ya, but it an old old kind of brown/green cymbal..its really big ...

I say sure, let me take a look..

A min later he came dwn with a nice big cym...never cleaned/....

It was a 50s Big stamp Zildjian avedis ...

Mint condition....20" THIN with a big Bell and ALL the 6 rivits...

I pulled out 2 twenty doller bills...he smiled...I took ..

It is by Far my best ride cym ..!

If I need less sizzle / I cover up a Cpl of the rivits with a piece of moongel I cut dwn..

(I usually have 4 rides available)

20"contantinople/22" 60s zild / zild ping ride & a 60s 18" ride.

The 18" 60s ride is in 2nd plce..

I've eyeballed a few old Zild's, but there were no sound files. Not that the sound files are always exactly the way it really sounds on your stand, but it helps eliminate the really bad ones.

Some would argue that jazz ride cymbals and big band ride cymbals are completely different beasts. For big band you would want a bright, pingy, cutting ride. For jazz, you would want a ride with more of a spread and more complex/darker overtones.

This is all subjective, of course. For small combo jazz, I really like thin old As and K Light Rides. For big band I like an HHX Stage Ride or just a plain K ride.

That is pretty interesting because Krut cymbals garner very little attention. They were a Beverley brand but made out of the same stock as Zyn and made by Premier.----generally a low end cymbal. I've had about a dozen of them and they are as you intimate, specific. Properly tailored to the music ,with just the right # of rivets or the right stroke and stick, they have lots of class but if you expect them to crash away and keep up with a B20 hand hammered ***el, then you will be disappointed. Very glad that a good Krut has a loving home.

T-Hat - I have been using a medium 21" Istanbul Sultan ride for seven years now. It is, bar none, the best sounding ride I've ever played. Think; old Turkish K, with great stick definition, slightly trashy, on the dark side and a wash that is to die for... sits perfectly under the ticking of the stick. The cymbal is versatile too as it has been lathed into zones. More bang for the buck in terms of how many sounds you can get out of this one cymbal. I was so impressed and happy with it, that I later added an 18" Istanbul Sultan crash, and a set of Mehmet jazz hats.

Definitely worth a look-see and a listen!

Hope this helps...

John

PS - Re: sizzle rides... one trick pony and I don't like the constant shhhhhhh of a wash they produce. Took me a lot of years of practice to gain some meager chops. I like to hear the pattern I'm playing on the cymbal, not a steady, rattling washhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Too many great drums to list here!

I'd have to say that its pretty hard to buy a cym / that you want to bring into yr playing kit (from the internet)..

Maybe 1 in 8 or 10...even..

Usually if a cym is for sale / I show up with a std/stxs in hand & take about 10mins of playing before i'd say yup..

And if the seller has a kit / Well, i'm not shy...lets get the cym on the kit and play it a lil..

I've noticed that the KEEPER (Cyms) usually don't go for sale..!

Just the ones that were bought / and the buyer later didn't like , so again they get sold..

An estate sale of maybe an older jazz drummer that has a set put together from yrs of sorting / Is the best. (buy them all). The Band

About 4 years ago I acquired a Diril 20" ride. It was a pretty impressive cymbal , especially for the money spent on it. Ibrahim Diril and Murat Diril are cousins or possibly uncle and nephew but both participated in the development of the Meinl Byzance line and have been trained in the traditions passed down through the K.Zildjian artisans. I began a correspondence with Ibrahim and since then, have been selling his cymbals a little. I sell them because I believe in them ; I don't believe in them because I sell them.

So far I have only branched out into selling the very traditional versions---those he calls traditional and jazz( although due to the competition in the marketplace, he is now making all kinds of lines, with crude bells and polished ones etc.). These ones are basic double hammered cymbals , lathed and stamped, not unlike a K ,in look , feel and tone. I get targeted weights from him . In my collection of vintage ride cymbals ( about 50---19" and up) , the Dirils compare most favourably with K.Zildjians and Ajahas. Depending on the weight, they can have a broad colour spectrum---lots of complexity or lean more towards the straightforward full ping of a good Ajaha. They are seldom shrill, like a lot of the more modern A's are. The ping and overtones are usually, nicely harmonic ...and they sell for about half of the retail , that the comparable cymbals from the big 4 or 5 sell for. I would definitely check them out and ..,they are classy ,old school cymbals and they are beautifull to look at as well.
