1980's Ludwig kit - Rocker ? USA / Taiwan ? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a Ludwig drum kit but the guy doesn't know anything about it and i'm trying to figure out if it is worth the 250€. The guy only knows it's from the 1980's.

According to what is said in a thread I found on this site it might be a Rocker kit (shells with clear laquer inside, classic lugs, solid bass drums spurs) but the tom holder doesn't look like the ones on the pictures in the thread.

So is it the Taiwan version made after 1994 with the pearl type holders? Despite the fact the guy said it was from the 1980's... and I guess it is not worth it.

Or is it a USA Ludwig ?

1. Drum Shell Material -- Wood

2. Drum Finish -- Black Rhodoid

3. Drum Badge -- Black & White badges (round corners)

3. Drum Dimensions -- Looks like: 22", 12", 13", 16", 14"

4. Interior Finish -- Natural, clear laquer

5. Hardware Configuration -- Classic ludwig type lugs (kick=8, toms=6 i guess)

7. Pictures below

Thanks !

Arthur, those like like U.S. rockers to me,those BD spurs were used as early as 1988,can't tell if the mount for the toms is original or not,but if the reciever on the BD is correct it would be easy to find a replacement mount. That is not the Pearl style holder. It looks like a later add on holdr

Even with tom holder being unoriginal those would go for 350.00 400.00 U.S. for the drums. I don't know what american made rockers go for in France but top of the line Luddy's usually go for at least 30 percent more in europe than in the states.

Looks like mine and mine are USA. I bought them used in 1990. According to the vintage drum guide Ludwig Rocker page this incarnation of Rockers started in 1988 ( I suppose it could've been 1987 but there's no catalog on the site for 1987). The small tom on the the set you're looking at looks like a 10". I added a pic of my tom mount which looks similar but yours is a 3 way accessory clamp. Maybe the mount and post on these drums were meant to be part of a stand for two smaller toms which is why there is a 10"(?) tom. It could've been a 7 piece with two toms sold, lost, trashed or stolen. Who knows. These are actually very good sounding drums and very well made for a lower end drum set and I've always liked the "Standard" lugs.

Sorry they're not clean.....someday.

Rims mounts are definitely aftermarket.

Hi!

This is definitely a Ludwig Rocker kit. Check the badges, if the badges have 'USA' on the right, it's a US made kit. If not, it's Asian.

The tom mount is not original. Also, those are 'Ludwig Standard' or in this case, 'Ludwig Rocker' lugs. Both are the same.

From looking at the interior, it looks like an 80's or early 90's kit. If you can get better close up pictures of the badges, lugs, interiors and tom mount I can give you more information.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot guys !

So this is what I was thinking, seems to be a USA Ludwig Rocker kit with another tom holder. But I don't mind I'm just looking for a cheap decent drum kit (not so easy to find in France!)

I'll try to get close up pictures to see those details.

That's right the small rack tom seems to be 10" actually... do you think the other one is 12" or 13" then ?

Anyway it looks like it's worth the 250€ so i'm gonna get them if I can !

Pretty excited ...

Great sounding kit, though the power tom look might not be the best.

I thought if it's black and white Ludwig badge it's US. I don't think those badges were ever put on an Asian product, correct? Those have the gaudy-looking badges..

Here is my reply from another thread:

I'm guessing you have seen the information at this link: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_rockers.html

Scroll down and look at the 1988 catalogs. I think the kit you are looking at is the Rocker (USA) with the 12 x 11 and 14 x 13 deep toms, 16 x 16 floor tom, 22 x 16 bass drum and 14 x 6 1/2 snare. The lugs are call Standard and not the Classic style. The toms are mounted upside down too. The snare is a 4-ply wood with chrome covering. The tom mount also has the optional cymbal holder too. The badges should also say USA along the "g" in Ludwig.

As pictured, it is worth 250€ ($322) or what ever the seller will take.

larryz: Nope, not all B/W badges are US made. If they say USA on the right side of the badge, they are. If not, they're Asian.

So if I get this right and if this: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_badges.html lists all the different badges there would be 2 options,

1 - B/W badges with USA written and no frame around the serial number

2 - B/W badges without USA written and a black frame around the serial number which means "made in asia"

Am I right ?

I'll get better pictures next tuesday
