Good morning all. I do not play drums though I have enormous respect and admiration for those who can keep all those dishes spinning at once, so to speak! Bowing

I have the following, enormously basic and embarrassing question, which requires a bit of context. Basically, the story is this: I have a very dear friend who has longed for an 1980s era Tama bell brass snare. Six months ago, I had no idea what this was, but now, for good or bad, I do. Because he had searched for years without luck and then the market for these drums took off, he despaired of ever owning one. I could tell you what an incredibly cool and kind guy this friend is and how he has never changed his optimistic and generous nature through thick and thin, but you get the picture. Anyway, I made it my mission to find one these things and get it for him. And I did. So my question. The drum had its lugs and hoops plated with brass and I would like to deliver it with another set of chrome hoops so that he could put whichever he liked better on it. Will any 14", ten hole hoops work on this drum? Are die-cast hoops de rigeur in this application? After what I went through to find this thing, I don't want to fall short now, especially given that this drum apparently cures blindness and leprosy...

To answer your question: yes. Other 14" 10-hole hoops WILL fit that drum.

Pressed hoops will prob'ly give it a bit more depth of tone as well, if that's what's required. Die cast hoops tend to have a sharper, "harder" sound compared to pressed.

I don't know about that drum curing leprosy, etc., but it WILL clear your sinuses when you lay into it.

Once again, good on ya and congrats for scoring that which is on a lot of folks' "holy grail" list.

Thanks - I appreciate that. So the type and material of the hoop is simply a matter of "tone" and the ear of the guy hitting it? So there is no one, most appropriate hoop? Do you know whether Tama would have originally sold it with pressed or die cast hoops? Maybe I should stick to original configuration and let him sort out what he likes better after the fact.

The first Bell Brass (the dirty-lookin' ones) were sold with pressed hoops.

Soon after, die-cast became standard equipment.

Wow, bad guitarist! You are some kind of friend!!! There's a Tama bell brass piccolo drum on Ebay which is beyond beautiful! It is listed at $2,627.74. I sure would love to own that instrument! I'm wondering. I don't have many friends but, the ones I do have, are certainly not of your wonderful and gracious nature. Would you become my best friend? Please. I don't get the asking price of these drums today. It's like the Horst link Sonor snares, peeps are asking well over £2500-£3000 for these things. I don't really get it. Will they make me sound 3000 times better?? Am I missing something here?

Thanks all. Drum is supposed to arrive today and I will try to take a couple of pictures. 84-XXXXX serial number, lacquered finish with the stylized "T " badge.

Being a guitarist, I really had no idea of the collectability of drums but of course it makes sense that players of any instrument would have their favorite instruments. It's been truly interesting.
