Mystery Holes -- Leedy & Ludwig Broadway New Era Snare Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I recently purchased the snare drum shown in the attached pic.

In one area of the shell there are five (5) holes drilled vertically, which the prior (not original) owner thought were used to mount some tone controls. As pointed out by fellow forum-member, vintagemore2000, it wouldn't make any sense to have a tone control on the snare side head.

Regardless of what was intended, the fact is that the holes do exist. Unfortunately, I can't attach a pic of the affected area because the pic I've got is too large. If anyone would like to see it, feel free to provide your email in a PM and I'll get it out to you.

The decision I've got to make is what to do with the extra holes and I'm open to all suggestions. Possible options that I've come up with are:

1. Leave the drum "as is";

2. Locate and install one tone control (although I've been informed that the holes for the "correct" muffler would be in a horizontal, not vertical, position) and don't bother with the other holes;

3. Same as #2 above EXCEPT plug the excess holes;

4. Have all the holes plugged; or

5. Re-wrap the shell and simply cover the existing holes.

What say you?

If it was my drum, I'd leave it... maybe fill the holes... I love those 4.5x14 new-era drums... yours is the 3rd or 4th BDP I've seen. Anybody ever seen a silver sparkle? ;-)

I realize this thread is a few years old, but if that really is a "New Era" Broadway snare, that's not the original wrap..that size was only available in Pearl.

Looks original to me! I'm no expert, but there's an image of one with a kit in the 1953 catalog.

I'd leave it alone. Nothing gained filling the holes, really. I've heard of guys taking some covering from underneath a lug to finish off the plugs, which is cool, but still unoriginal and doesn't raise the value. And there's covering missing under a lug!!! Crazy.

Leave it alone.

Best,

Aaron

I have a New Era Broadway...and thanks to Vintagemore2000 I finally saw ad advertisement for it...

The lugs are the same as the original post...now the question becomes, did they use this lug configuration on any other snares? I've never seen one...anyone?

Only available in "Pearl"? "Pearl" means any wrapped finish regardless of color.
