Slingerland Vintage Snare Drum? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey everyone!

I'm a 17 year old drummer and I've been playing for 7-years. Most of which I've been playing on this old Sligerland Snare Drum that my dad gave me. Yesterday, I was playing with the concert/marching band I play with in the summer, and I was talking to one of the other percussionists(a 79-year old man) who was telling me about his first kit being a Slingerland, but this sparked my interest to figure out what it is. The drum has the 1956-1961(?) Chicago, Illinois patch with 8-lugs and it's wrap is Aqua Sparkle Pearl, I'm pretty sure. I think I read that wrap was only used in 1959? I think it's 5.5" because I got a Ludwig hard case for it when I got into drumming, and we had to cut out a layer of plastic from the top for it to fit. The snare strainers have been replace with Ludwig strainers, and the snares are some double wide snare, which I'm pretty sure is a replacement. The heads are also replaced. I'm wondering if any one can help me figure out what this drum is, I'll post pictures when I get on my computer at home to help you out! Would there be a serial number anywhere that would be a give-away? I looked on the patch and the inside of the drum and didn't see anything. From my research, the closest guess I can make is that it is a Slingerland 1959 DUCO Snare, but I'm probably wrong. Any help would be appreciated!!

Good to have you with us, the color your stating that it is if it is a sparkle wrap then it would not be a duco color, here give these links a look as to the color of your drum. also the Badge is what you are calling a patch if it is indeed a late 50's model no it will not have a serial number on the badge, look at the snare drum links also to see if you can identify your snare drum

Yes, badge, my apologies. After looking through the finishes, it looks to me that it is the Sparkling Silver Pearl finish. Do you think it could be the Student Model Radio King?

If your drum has the rim clips and such yes it could. when you post your pics I can tell you for sure.

Here are some of the pictures. A little update, I talked to my Dad about the rims and they are replacement but we still have the original "rim-shot" rims that came on the drum, we just prefer the style rim for playing. You can see the Ludwig replacement snare strainer in the pictures.

Here are the last two pictures, one of the inside of the drum from the bottom(and showing off my double wide snare. haha) And the other is the adjustment knob for the inside head muffle, whatever you prefer to call it. I hope these pictures help determine what this drum is!

Your pics are good, but would really be helpful is a pic or two of the badge / label (any on the outside or inside) and also a pic of the rims and clips that you have for it.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Welcome G. Judging by the extra holes around the throw off and the maple interior, you have a real Gene Krupa Model Radio King. Congratulations. It should have a 3 point strainer and a bridge piece and it should be a one ply shell with the reinforcing rings. You really should put those original hoops back on. They are chrome over brass (COB) and will make the drum sound the way it was meant to be. Perhaps someone here can help you find an original 3 point strainer set up for you so you can put it back to its original condition. You need to take very good care of this drum. Play it and enjoy it but try to avoid abusing it. You have a special drum there. Can you provide a picture of the badge? I'd like to know if there is an extra loop in the "S". That will confirm its age to be between 1956-'59

I never really gave you a name. haha You can call me Greg! I greatly appreciate everyone's help! I talked to dad and we're going to see if we can find the original strainer and if we don't we'll probably find one to buy. You can rest easy knowing this drum is in good hands with me, it's overprotected! haha Here is the picture you asked for of the badge. Interestingly, I was looking at the Slingerland badges on the website, and it didn't match any of them...

EDIT:I looked on the History of Slingerland page and it looks to be a '59-'61 Slingerland badge!

You are correct on that badge. VDG is great, isn't it? Do a bit of research before you buy a 3 point strainer so you don't overpay. The price these command can get pretty high and some people want way too much for them but if you take your time you'll have a better chance of getting a good deal and a good working part. Put a post up in the "wanted" section here as well. There's a very good chance that someone here on VDF will be able to help you find the right parts.
