Ringo: Peace & Love at the Grammy Museum

The primary goal of any band is to put on a show that people will come and enjoy and go home talking about a good time with songs stuck in their heads because of that good time at the show.

The resulting fame and fortune comes as a direct result of the show you put on, and the demand for recorded music to buy and cherish or enjoy over again can`t be done unless the first goal is achieved.

Their are prolly 80% of VDF forum members here with that kind of popularity and fame as a direct result of their performances at their shows. Those people have the right to speak out and challenge guys like Ringo who enjoyed the fame of being a household name who`s songs and shows were constantly played on radio and TV throughout their careers.

I am not one of those people but will admit that Ringo did what every band`s drummer dreams of,...hit`n it big and make`n a living of the fame and fortune your bands show accomplished.

I`m not sure I could handle that, but I`m sure Ringo would sound better on Teardrops !i

Okay, I'll put my two cents in here:

Any discussion of famous drummers of the 20th century will bring out a number of names. To us, here on this forum, or in face to face discussions with others with our interests in our communities, the discourse would tend to slant toward minutia and esoteric facts. We may bring up names of famous drummers with each other from time to time, but not all that often. 'We' all know who they are. We'll discuss technique, tasteful interludes, speed and whatnot, but there is one convention that a few of us are missing.

Richard Starkey made a difference.

One can make a difference for any number of reasons, good, evil and every shade in between, but he and those other three guys made a huge difference in their day. And, the repercussions (no pun intended, but I'll take it if props are given) of their collective, and individual input into our world is still making a difference today.

However you feel about their accomplishments, they changed the music industry. Also, Ringo changed another industry, nearly single handed. Ask someone on the street if they remember the Beatles. If so, ask them if they remember what kind of guitars Paul, John and George played. You more than likely will get a confused look and a shrug. Ask them what kind of drums Ringo played, and many will tell you 'Ludwig'... no wonder they gave him a gold plated snare.

Are there better drummers than Ringo? Sure... that list is long and studded with names that all of 'us' will recognize. But look down that list of people that 'we' know, and pick out the ones that actually 'changed' things. That list will be much shorter, and include Mr. Starr.

I agree with what your saying to a degree about Ringo he in fact made a HUGE difference to the drumming world, But to the statement of asking Joe Q public about what instruments they played you'll more than likely get a blank stare from most on the street., To add to this the other members in the band made no less of a Huge impact to the Guitar and Bass world, I'm a guitar and bass player also go on any of the guitar and bass guitar forums you'll see this very type thread over there also. Rickenbacker, and Vox are household names also due to the beatles, In fact call Rickenbackers phone number right now on their answering machine you'll be greeted to a Hard days night playing on the machine. The vox Ac 30 owes it's popularity to the beatles, The same way with Hofner bass guitars.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Ringo did what Gene Krupa did in his generation for kids growing up during the 60's - popularize the drums and inspire many of them to pick up the drumsticks! And, of course, The Beatles had a PROFOUND influence on pop culture, pop music and the music industry.

For me, one of my "bucket list" items was putting together my very own Ringo tribute set. While it's not totally authentic, it's pretty close. Anyway, I can't wait to see the real deal next month in L.A.
