As far as the sound, with the original bottom calf head and snare wires, the sound was pretty dry and the drum probably doesnt project much.

Masonite is heavy so I doubt they used it to produce a light weight drum. More than likely it was a money savings thing, at least thats how I see it from a building material perspective.

Yes, I realized that after I picked up the shell. Not any lighter than a maple shell. Guess it was just cost cutting.

Here's mine.

I thought I had photos of the inside of the shell, I don't know where they are.

I'll flip it over & take some photos later, though you can kind of see through the vent hole in one picture.

I really want to race home and check it.

I didn't drench it or anything, but when I had it apart for cleaning a few months ago, the rings and shell got wiped down with lemon oil....as I do with all my wooden drums.
