I recently acquired this drum and it's a bit of a mystery. The drum never had a badge. No markings anywhere. The original grommet was a bake-lite grommet but it fell apart and was replaced with a standard brass grommet. The strainer appears to be a 1920's-30's Slingerland. The tube lugs and rim clips are similar to Slingerland but subtly different. The ball end of each tube has a flat side and not totally round, unlike any made by Slingerland, Leedy or Ludwig. The rim clips also have a flattened tip. The shell of this drum is a solid maple shell.

Does anyone have any idea who made this drum? Any clues greatly appreciated.

Looks to me like a 1929 Slingerland Artist with 3 point. Love that finish.

Could it be a Liberty drum? Or maybe a Carlton? Maybe even a prototype for one of these two companies?

Yes, it does resemble an Artist but there are several things that disqualify it as an Artist. The lugs and clips are different. Also, an Artist would have heavy double flange hoops with clips. Also, an Artist with a solid maple shell would most likely have a tone control like the type used on Broadcaster models.

Good guess. However, a Liberty would most likely have a badge. The strange lugs and clips are non-Liberty, as well. I know very little about English drums, so a Carlton is a possibility. However, wouldnt any Carlton have a badge?

What does the shell construction look like? Any pics of the interior? I hope you get some answers. Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Havent played it yet but usually, these old solid maple shell drums sound great. Here is a photo of theinterior.

I haven't commented, but have been watching this thread with interest. The drum is certainly a beauty! You mentioned the original grommet was Bakelite, and crumbling. Could that be the reason for the missing badge? Looking again, I see no indication of a missing badge around the vent hole, though.
