We are moving the band to a much smaller space and the singer suggested I bring my Roland kit, is it possible to play my reg kit toned down some? is there any tips anyone has to tone down a kit, or am I better off bringing the roland which can be controlled with the PA?
What set to use small practice space

You could always put together a gig-kit type thing using a floor tom for a kick. Dw makes a good floor tom holder thingy for this purpose that involves 0 modding/drilling (shuddering...)
For my mostly unplugged klezmer gig I either use this set up or borrow my 2 yr olds' RB kit with a 10 and 12" tom from one of my kits. Her 16" kick does the job & her 10" snare actually kicks ass! I use 2 splashes for hats sometimes, thin crashes and a Paiste 602 flat ride that is really sensitive. Tuning a 14" snare lower, more bluesy, can lower projection volume. Also, when I play quietly I'm much more conscious of my posture, which is not a bad thing!
As much as I enjoy practicing on a V-Drum (linked via midi to Addictive drums), I don't get the dynamic range that I need in a live situation.

or just leave the floor tom upright and attach a cocktail pedal to one of the legs. That's what I did for a Dixieland band. Snare, cocktail FT, High hat, ride and a splash. What more do you really need?

Are you looking to take up less space or lower volume?

Well then you have a whole variety of options. I've used the Ringo solution, putting "tea towels" (hand towels) over the drums. Held on with large rubber bands or bungees or even tape. Or you could buy those hot rod bamboo stick things or any of a whole slew of other stick type things that create a softer sound. Also they sell those rubber inserts to cover the drums and cymbals but those really cut the sound out quite a bit.
Filling the bass drum with towels deadens it like crazy but also lowers the volume.
You might also try thinner sticks which tend to help you hit more softly. It depends on the type of music you play, how hard you hit normally, and how important the drum sound is.
Obviously your not going to have the same sound with all this muffling and alternate stick solutions.
Hope that helps.

I wouldn't want to be in your position. I have played in huge spaces and tiny ones......always play YOUR drums.......simply adjust:p
+1 for the Hot rod (multi rod) sticks. I played with an electronic kit in small practice spaces for a while and just had no fun at all. Yes, you could control the volume, but man, I really didnt enjoy myself. Let us know what you end up trying and how it works out. Good luck!
Just play at your normal volume.. But keep the door closed..
Cheers

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
