Scored a Ludwig Standard Ruby Strata Set Today Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi Bondo;

Okay, the drum gods have either been very good, or quite evil to you... it all depends on how you look at it. You've got most of a model S-300 Ludwig Standard drum kit. These are great kits! The problem is, it came with a 14 X 14 floor tom... and those are kind of tough to find. Now, if you don't mind 'non originality' of the kit, you're in luck! Grab a 16" floor tom in Ruby Strata and you've got it. If you go for originality... well, it's going to be a while unless you have some serious mojo and a bucket full of outstanding karma in the bank. The 14" floor toms are, and I hate this word, I so much would rather use the word scarce, but their not... 14" Standard floor toms are kind of rare. Not rare like you'll never see or find one... no, but rare like worse than scarce and you'll see one in your wrap in good shape that you won't have to mortgage your house over infrequently.

Now, I'm also not trying to scare you off... IMHO you've got most of the holy grail of Standard's, in a very cool wrap (the only better wrap is Avocado Strata, but then I may be biased). The S-300's didn't sell all that well, and here we are. You mentioned this was a mid life crusade... well bro... you are indeed on a quest for the best.

If it were me, what would I do? Find a 16 in good shape, use it until you find the 14. The hardware you're missing is not that difficult to find. Ask here on the forum or look to ebay for the parts. These are excellent drums, have fun with 'em!

The ebay auction you mentioned: That floor tom looks like it's had water damage. Before you do anything, ask for a better description and a lot more pictures... frankly, I'd pass on those for that price.

Thanks Craig! Lots of great information! I don't feel I have to have the exact kit as it came but it would be nice. I agree with your opinion on finding a 16" and waiting until a nice 14" comes by. And yes, I did not like the looks of the ebay floor tom either. My work is seasonal and is tailing off so I now have to beginning rationing my drum purchases but hey, maybe there is still some loose change in the karma bank!

Hi. Not much new info. I kind of resent not picking up the two rack toms and floor tom that were on ebay. You know, the one with what appeared to have water damage. The auction went down to $150 "buy it now" and sold. I have only seen one other ruby strata floor tom since and is faded compared to my kit. I search daily for a ruby red strata floor tom and tom arm.

I did score a silver mist 5 piece the other day for $400. Great shape other than some seam separation. Also grabbed a Ludwig 70's three piece 13,16,22 blue sparkle kit. The bass drum has the consollete and no extra holes. I suppose you will be asking for pics! Keep on Pl

Pic of the latest silver mist Ludwig Standard. Overall very nice. Needs a seam repair and a badge repair. I also purchased the recent Ludwig Standard hardware pack that was on ebay to go with both kits. The one with two cymbal stands, hi hat, bd pedal, bass drum cymbal arm, tom stand and snare stand. Worked out to $33 per piece which I found reasonable.

The Silver Mist set looks sharp!

I'm Ludwig fan from way back and have had several vintage kits (still have the WFL set I got when I was 13) but my favorite for gigging is my Blue Mist Standard outfit. They are great drums!

Keep watching for the Strata floor tom. They are out there...'just not as common as Silver Sparkle Classics.

Keep us posted and continue to post pictures. Everyone loves pictures.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
