[QUOTE=Purdie Shuffle;241351]What about the -obvious- damage inside the shell around the grommet? That badge was removed or changed at some point. If you look closely enough, you'll see the ring left from the old flange. Why would anyone remove/replace a badge on a 402?

As for the sonor stamp that is just a reflection from a sonor head , i never seen a sonor stamp in that location on any sonor snare , As for John he's right about the dremel grinder i seen that before and it looks kinda fresh to me also there looks to be some kind of tape residue with paint half torn off inside the gromet. I don't know why people do stuff like that , i would rather have a nice player drum than a botched up replica of a so called authentic piece , but in this case i think the drum is the real deal and a crazy deal to boot , great score bro.

I think it's real also, but maybe just the grommet was replaced.I'd love to see a pic of the muffler and what color the felt is.The knurling on the knob looks right, but I can't tell what size the knob is.Looks 3/4.

Also it looks like the bearing edges taper in toward the inside of the shel, which is another indicator of a brass shell.

Steve - the Super I have is from 63' the last year they made them. It has a red-felt baseball-bat muffler. I think the ones from years before with the round-knob mufflers had white felt, right?

Not sure if the red-felt was used any other year - other than 63' w/baseball bat muffler.

You tell me...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I thought that the red-felt baseball bat mufflers were used as early as 1961.

i don't know that ive ever been able to tell when they actually started. thought it was a little later than that, like closer to 63. but with ludwig, who knows anyway? i have done some tracking on serial numbers for about ten years as to when they switched from red felt to white felt. there was no exact time for this either. i do have red felts dated as late as spring of 65.
