Lug Identifiaction Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

You guys will probably figure this out in an instant, but I don't know what brand these lugs are. I was in a music store in Oregon when I bought a 3-piece shell set for about $45. The shells are luan for sure, so it is probably an MIJ kit. The owner said the hoops on it were Slingerland-type, but I don't know about the lugs. There are two different sets of tom lugs, and another set of snare lugs.

The snare lugs.

The first tom lugs.

The second tom lugs. They are a little more rounded.

So who made these for sure, and what era do you suspect they are from?

Thanks guys.

MIJ Slingerland stencils. My 1st drum set was a Majestic with the lugs in your "second tom lugs" pic. I'm sure the MIJ experts will chime in and give you more detailed info on them since they were all probably used on many other MIJ drums. Which ones I do not know.

1981 Slingerland Magnum 8pc Pewter Silk
1971 Slingerland Avante 60N Lavender Satin Flame
1976/7 Ludwig Vistalite 5pc Yellow
1980's Ludwig Rocker 5pc Black
2004 Gretsch Catalina Birch Caribbean Blue
1998 Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic 14X4.75
1922 Bower Snare

Thanks for the input!

I had my suspicions, because the shells were certainly luan/Philippine mahogany. Perhaps I should include that in my first post...

Your welcome. Btw,nice job with the photo display using 3 lugs for 3 views. There were also MIJ Slingerland copy rims. You still did very well at $45. You should post pics the rest of the set.

The snare lugs and tom lugs first photo are Pearl made lugs used on about 40 names of drums that they sold from the mid 60's-1975.

The tom lugs in photo two are also made by Pearl in the late 60's.

Star made drums with these type of Slingerland copy's also.

One thing about all these lugs most of them will have a metric insert in them.Mikey

Sure thing!

*Pic dump ahead! Look out!*

The whole set. Before this they were wrapped in a nice red sparkle wrap, but whoever owned them before me painted over everything with some tacky robin's-egg blue. They didn't even do a good job, it was mottled and bumpy and terribly uneven. It was an eyesore, so I did the right thing and tore that crap off! You can still see blue remnants, something I may never be able to rid them of.

This is from the 16". The one and only rim it came with has a clearly Slingerland inward-bending top flange. Probably an MIJ-copy, like you said. Both bearing edges have reinforcing rings.

Inside the first 12", which also has reinforcing rings, and a little damage that was done sometime before I got it.

Inside the second 12", which shows the wood grain pretty well. I'm pretty sure it's luan, given its rough, vertical grain.

One of the two tom mounts, with 'JAPAN' printed pretty clearly. There's a bit of grime on it, but otherwise it's in reasonable condition.

Now if only I could pin down a manufacturer... I have plans to do some restoration work on these babies before too long!
