Question about Ludwig 70's sizes.

Loading...

I am getting ready to sell/cleaning a 70's Ludwig 3 ply BDP kit w/ granitone interiors. Seems to be all original but the sizes are throwing me off. 20, 16, 14, 13 and supra. Is this probably just a special order? Not sure a pic would make a difference here but I'll try to get one up later. Doesn't seem to work from my phone.

Curtis this is when the catalogs get on my nerves, It could of been a special ordered kit.It doesn't really matter, as long as the drums are legit. sounds like a honey of a kit.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Yeah, the catalogs didn't always line up with what was out there. In the 1971 catalog, the Down Beat and Rock Duo kits have 14x20 BDs, both according to the descriptions and the pictures (16 lugs instead of 20). In the 1973 catalog, the Down Beat set isn't even available, and even though they used the same picture of the Rock Duo set (with 16 lug 20" BDs), the description says 14x22s.

When I was a kid and drooling over the idea of owning a Ludwig kit, it seemed like what most music stores stocked was kits with 20" BDs, 'cause I saw a lot of them. In my memory anyway, I don't recall the 22" BDs being the norm until well into the early 70s. I suppose that might me just me, 'cause I had a 20" (Gretsch set) and badly wanted a Ludwig set with a 22. That was what was "cool." :)

So, special order or not, this sounds like a very legit, very good kit!

Thanks gents these are actually like a Hollywood set up just to be clear. That's why the 20 and 14 ride threw me off. Can't wait to get these set up and tuned up.

Curtis,

My '71 Ludwig BDP is just one drum (the 14) shy of yours. It's a 20/13/16 matched set. I always figured it was a custom order, as the kick size and it not having a cymbal mount. Yours sounds like a nice kit. Good luck with your sale.

I assumed it was a thing where the guys in the factory just said "hey we have this 20 and 14 still sitting here. Send it out with these (13, 16) so we can get these shells used and out of here."

And from the way I understand things during this era, what you just said could very well be...
