Tom heads for Bonham sound Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I'm going to mess around with changing heads on a mid 60s Ludwig. Going try something thicker than the Ambassador heads. What's the closest thing to the Bonham heads by Remo? Emp's or one of the newer vintage style heads?

I would guess that the Vintage A (which is double ply) would be more like something JB played, based on the years he was active. The Vintage A is said to be modeled after their 1957 design, and I don't know when the current Amb head would have been created.

Also take into account the sizes he used and the type of wood his drums were (and Acrylics for later live stuff). Tuning is important too, as is (sadly) you and I simply not being Bonham.

I steered you wrong according to Remo. They claim the Vintage Emp is what you're looking for.

Bonham used Coated Emperors on tops and Coated Ambassadors on bottom. No muffling except for the bass drum on batter and reso side with felt. All heads tuned higher than you'd expect, with the bottoms quite a bit higher.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Thanks! I wonder if the regular coated Ambs would be good for the bottoms?

I have used this combo for a long time and you have to really crank up the reso's more than you think they are pretty tight...
