Great thread hope the cool kits keep rolling in.

I'll add a history on mine as well.

I was 10 in 1971 when dad bought them out of a basement ($75.00). It was a father son project to get them looking better. The small lug units had a coat of red then blue paint over the gold wrap. Whoever painted it the first time used like 40 grit sandpaper and destroyed the wrap. Pulled it.

No regrets to this day, wood drums are cool with a wood finish.

The large lugs ones, can't say what they started out as. Badges are flush so never wrapped. Fire in the basement in 1978. Insurance paid for refinish on the shells. The various parts went into coffee cans and everything was in storage until I brought it to Spokane last year.

37 years later they will bang again :-)

Nothing special here but I like them.

Wow there are some beauties here Mind Blowi The Story with mine are that the finish is an off color batch of Black Diamond pearl that came out with a blue tint. Also cigar lugs with oval badges means that it was made pre-war ,shelved and sold after with the newer badge. . .13,14,16,26,28,artist snare

Some beauties in this thread, wish I had a barn and a pot of money. Here is my offering, I keep going back to this kit it's so versatile. There aren't too many of these in London and it gets plenty of love.

I started looking for RKs that were originally painted but in bad cosmetic shape. Having read on the forum about using Maloof oil to refinish the shells, I put my kit together a piece at a time. The 14x26 bass drum has an aluminum badge and the hoops had remnants of dark blue paint in the inlay channel. I wound up using the dark blue stripe on the hoops of all the drums. They are a joy to play and I alternate between calf heads and Aquarian MVs depending on the gig.

Thanks! It's my favorite finish. Unfortunately, Radio King snare drums (or ANY Radio King drum) is almost unheard of in this finish. The only Radio King snare in Sea Green I am aware of is Mike Curotto's (surprise, surprise!) 1940's Super Gene Krupa snare. It's really a great finish and I wish it had been offered longer. Below is a close-up of the 9x13 tom. Note the double ended snare drum lugs. When the first RK tom toms were produced, the Streamline tom lugs were not yet available, so snare drum lugs were used. These double ended lugs can be seen on Gene Krupa's first drum set.

Man...there are some sweet RK kits in this thread...keep 'em coming! I was looking for a late 40's kit and it was between a Leedy kit or a Radio King. I found my '49 Leedy at the right price, right time, right sizes and excellent condition, so that is what I went with. IMO, both companies were putting out some awesome drums during this period.

Mark it's no secret your sea green pearl RK's are my favorite ever! The closest thing I've found with the same finish is a old accordian at the local Irish club in town here. :) It's just a wall hanger decoration but cool none the less. Perhaps someday you'll sweet talk Mr C into selling you his SGP snare.....and a few fist fulls of sea green cash as well. Cool Dude
