Drum heads

Went on a road trip Sunday and came home with some 6 ply Ludwigs. Man, these drums are heavy! I am looking for some advice on what heads to use for these tubs. I have never played a set of 6 ply, so it will all new to me. Thanks for the help. Tommy

I have a newer 7-ply Classic Maple kit and I like clear Ambassador resos and coated Vintage Ambassador batters for the toms. For the bass drum, can't go wrong with a coated or clear Powerstroke 3 as a batter and nearly any head as a reso with a felt strip. Fantastic drums for nearly any situation if you ask me...can't go wrong.

Ludwig WeatherMaster Silver Dots over Ludwig WeatherMaster Heavy Clear.

Were these purchased from a Guitar Center by chance?

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Nope! I bought them off a guy in a toys-r-us parking lot. These drums had Ludwig silver dot "STRIDERS" over EVANS all weather heavy duty rock heads. Those Evans are some thick heads! I never tried them to hear what they sounded like, pretty dirty. Here is a pic of the toms. In process of a deep cleaning.

There are so many personal preferences and opinions when it comes to drum head selection. Ambassador-weight heads are always a good choice for the reso side. For the batter side, I just discovered Evans G-plus, which is a 12 mil single-ply head. These heads sound fantastic on my PDP X7 toms; 8, 10, 12, 14, 16. The single-ply lets them speak fast, with the slightly heavier, 12 mil, thickness giving wonderful warmth and punch. Give them a try!

Tommy, this is the head combination I was going to recommend! Superclassic beat me to the punch. I had a set of 6-plies that I sold to our VDF buddy, Kevin. Those shells are resonant and really sound fantastic with silver dots or clear black dots. For my money, those six ply shells were some of the most musical sounding drums Ludwig ever made. Enjoy them!

John

Too many great drums to list here!
