Vintage Rogers Question Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Greetings Ladies and Gents---I'm new to the forum, so please be gentle. I have a question and I'm a bit confused about a set of Rogers, Dave Clark Londoners (Dyna-Sonic snare), I bought in 1968. I played professionally for many years in and around St. Louis, the midwest and points hither and yon, but quit cold-turkey one night in 1984, put the set in its cases and just recently pulled them out and set them up. I'm the only owner; and after pulling the set out, putting new heads on and setting them up, I took an interest in the origin and history of the drums; hence, I'm on this forum---

I don't know why I never paid attention when I was playing, but of the two side toms, the floor tom and the kick, three different locations are identified. The 12-inch tom indicates Dayton, the 13-inch tom indicates Fullerton, the floor tom indicates Cleveland, and the kick indicates Dayton. The 13-inch (Fullerton) tom has the only label that has not had the factory pre-printed label identifying the model as a "Holiday" changed. All of the other drums have had the factory model "Powertone" print blackened out, and "Holiday" is hand-written above the blackened out "Powertone" printing.

There is no distinguishable difference in the materials, construction, edges or hardware between the drums. What was I sold in 1968, and not that it makes any difference 45 years later, what does any of it mean? Thanks for your reading patience and feedback.

Pictures of the set showing the badges would help but if it has a fullerton drum in it and you bought the kit new it is a early fullerton set that has a dayton drum in it as they used up all the left over shells from Dayton. It was quite common to see a paper tag marked out and retypes to holiday but the real telling part will be your collet noses should be machined on a early set like you have.. lets see some good pics. and Welcome to the best drum forum on the net..

Welcome OldGrey, you're in good company here.

Unrelated to dating your drums, what's the finish? Can't wait to see some pics.

Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. I've attached some pics. I'll have to take and post some pics of the labels. The drums are silver sparkle except for the chrome Dyna-Sonic. All of the interiors are speckled, regardless of Fullerton, Cleveland or Dayton labels. Yes, it was exciting to get them out of the cases, dust them off, clean, tune and get them set up again (I can't say I was excited, however, to hear how I played---It's been a long, long time!). I still have the original "Rogers" heads (Weather King) tucked away except for one bass head (damn disco band!), and just replaced last month with the Evans heads you see in the pics. All the cymbals (took about 4 hours to clean!) are Zildjian (just bought the Zildjian "K" splash you see between the side toms.) The Remo Roto-Toms I bought in the mid-70s. I recently purchased new cymbal stands, but you can see the two original Rogers stands that came with the set. I wore out the Rogers hi-hat and replaced it with the Tama in the early 70s. I always loved this set, and despite not playing them for so many years, I could never part with them---in spite of my wife's pleadings! What do you think? Are they keepers? If they could talk, they could tell some great stories.

Ex kit/cymbals!

Can you shoot a pic of the BD rods/claws you need? Think I might have them...

Hi and welcome.

If they are all speckled inside, I would say they are probably all early Fullerton drums. Shortly after the move to California in 1969, they were using up a lot of old tags - probably because the newer Fullerton tags were in short supply for a little while.

Cleveland tags = 1957 - 1966 flat grey inside

Dayton tags = 1966 - 1969 flat grey inside until 1967, then speckled

Fullerton tags = 1969 - 1972 speckled inside

'9/72' tags = 1972 - 1975 speckled inside

'Big R' tags = 1975 - 1987 speckled until 1979, then clear inside
