Cool finds when buying an MIJ kit Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Hi guys, I thought I would start a thread on some of the little diamonds you have found when buying a run of the mill MIJ kit. It always excites me to get something out of the ordinary when picking these up. With that said I will start off. I came across an add for a cheap beginner kit near me. Looking at the photo's I could tell that it was a beat up MIJ kit but, it had a 10 lug deep snare which I thought was odd. I decided I would have a look at it anyway. When I went to the sellers house and examined the kit I was blown away. These are the diamonds I found:

- 8x14 10 lug Staccato snare drum,

- 14 inch Paiste Formula 602 SoundEdge hi hats,953438 & 954189

- 19 inch 50's Zildjian crash ride with rivets (large crack in it)

- 20 inch Zildjian Avedis ride made in Canada

From what I have researched (limited information) the snare drum would be early 80's based on the badge. Apparently, these were being built by Ray Ayotte for Staccato. If anyone has any further info on the snare or the date for the hi hats I would greatly appreciate it.

So that's my story, what's yours?

Dean

Cool snare and hats. What would be even cooler, is to know the value of the surprises vs. what you paid for all.

Cool finds.

So that's my story, what's yours?

I went to buy some MIJ kit for a student for $150, and it came with a Supra I couldn't make out in the picture. Oh, and after talking with the seller for about a half an hour, he offered to sell me a pile of old Zildjians for $100. 2 complete sets and then some. Good day.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I got nothin on this!! I often find some good gems locally, but never have the coin to flip for it at that time.

I found an acrolite snare with a PDP kit for $75 a few weeks back.

Missing pieces clear B/O vistalite kit for $200 a few months back. I really wanted this one...I have wanted vistalites for years.

there was an older entry level kit on craigslist here a few months back. i noticed the hoop clips on the snare. got the guy to send me some pics. i ended up buying just the snare from him. it was an early 20's ludwig heavy brass shell 5x14 8 lugger, great shape. i was honest with him about what he had an got it for a great price. everybody was happy in this case.
