this may sound stupid but seriously, how the heck do you keep a hold on them while playing? is there something i'm doing wrong? it seems the more i've been playing, the more i loose a stick and it is usually the one from my right hand (i'm right handed). any suggestions or is this just something a drummer has to deal with?

That is why a lot of guys wear gloves when they play. The fact that you're losing the stick is actually a good sign! It means you have a light grip, that translates into more movement/rebound/speed from the stick.

You can try adjusting your grip a bit. What grip are you using? German, (palm down) or French (palm up)?

Play a set of single strokes with the right hand and rotate slowly back and forth between the French and the German. There are lots of useful positions in-between. One of them might feel more comfortable to you and solve the dropsy problem.

hi john, i'd have to say i use the german grip. the gloves you mention, are these gloves that are made for drumming?

i will give the single stroke thing a try. thanks for the videos, they helped me understand what you were saying. thanks john

does stick size have anything to do with this too?

If you hit Amazon.com and search for drum stick tape or drum stick wax you see some grip enhancing options as well.

Mr. Zogs Sex Wax... Zidjian stick wax... these do-dads called Gig Grips... Gorilla Snot wax.. and they have sticky stick tape for fingers and sticks.

There is whole cottage industry built around keeping your sticks in your hands...interesting!

I have never tried any of these but I might get some Gorilla Snot just to put the jar on a shelf. :)

Not a Guru... just interested..

I used glove's like baseball batting glove's made by nike or champion golf glove's. I play with 2B and 5B stix's..Zild, makes glove's too but they are the same as batting glove's and cost more...Mikey

As mentioned, Gorilla Snot is the best cure for this, hands down. Another solution I have employed is to keep some hand lotion in your gig bag/case and moisturize before playing. Just do it before the moment you start your first song because otherwise they will be too slippery/wet.

My personal opinion is that gloves look dorky and age you to be some metal/hair band guy from the 80s (which does not go over well with today's audience). You never see Buddy or John or (fill in the blank here) where them, do you?

Gorilla snot, yuck! You think they could have come up with a name that would make you want to buy the product.
