ReWrap for Ludwig/ Blue Silk Pearl? Possible? Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Hey Guys

Just wanted to ask a question. Some time ago I purchased a Ludwig Mach 4 kit, from 1971. The finish is Blue Silk Pearl. I have the same set like you see on this photo (see attachement).

I have almost never seen a kit like that. Everyone plays on the sparkle kits. Wich are very nice....but nobody seems to have a kit like mine, in that colour (and with long lugs). For me that seems very nice, because I kind off 'off-hype' with my kit :)

The wrap has some scraches here and there. I also removed the tomholder and some dampers....as result you have also some damage on this places.

I wanted to ask. Is this kind off wrap still available? Would it be a good idea to rewrap the kit and is it possible? Does anyone know something about that particular finish?

Does rewrapping does something about the value of the kit?

What would you do? :)

With scratches here and there, do not remove the old wrap. It will cut value in half. Can you post a pic of you actuall drums for us please?

I have a 70's Ludwig Blue Silk set as well. I looked high and low for matching replacement wrap and came up empty. I wanted to keep as much of the original wrap as possible but could not find anything even close.

Good luck on your search. That is a very nice set you have.

Can I ask why you removed the "dampers" ( if you're referring to "mufflers" or "tone controls")? Why not leave them there and just don't use them? Did they rattle?

Ilya - You'll never find a close replacement for that wrap. Play them as they are. They will hold their value for you. I love those mach lugs, Ludwig should still be using them. They look great on drums.

Enjoy, really nice old kit.

Well, I removed the mufflers from the 13' tom sins I had to go to the studio and sometimes they were rattling a bit. The 16" floortom still has them.

Are you shure I can use car wax on the drums???

Well, they still look good on a stage, very good actually.

Well, I guess I will let the kit like that. Well I saw Ludwig still makes the Mach lugs, it's an option on their new kits as well.

I also really like the look. Gives something special to the drums.....the colour also looks very cool on stage with some spotlights... Walking

Just pitty I can not make them like new anymore...but yes, probably that's what's vintage is about :)

Any idea of the value of that kit?

Are they wraped drums Or are they lacquer finish. If they have a plastic/cortex wrap then the suggestion of Novus would be the way to go. Wipe them down with a damp cloth, clean off any grime, then apply Novus. You can buy it at a real hardware store. They make three of them Novus 1,2,3. I would use the Novus 2. They dont look like they need much work. But that Novus will give them a new shine for sure.

That is a good looking kit. It is interesting that those finishes (silk, satin, flash, or whatever a particular manufacturer called them) are no longer available. Does anyone know who manufactured those wraps? I wonder if that might have been a different manufacturer who is no longer in business? I always thought those wraps were pretty classy. They were used a great deal by Pearl, Tama and Rogers in the 70's. Others used them as well but it seems kind of synonymous was those three manufacturers.
