I recently bought a tom-tom mount that looks like nickle but a magnet sticks to it.It was the worst chrome plating job ever,or it faded perfectly to look like nickle. It is a keeper, but is it possible to have nickle hardware that a magnet will stick to? On the rest of the nickle hardware on my kit,a magnet doesn't stick to it...I did end up with some interesting nickle hardware from the 30's,40's
can nickle be magnetic? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Yes, it is possible for it to stick. Ludwig nickel hoops are either NOB(rass) or NOS(teel). I've read somewhere that Ludwig's vintage kits w/ nickel hardware had a NOB hoop on the top, while a NOS hoop was used on the bottom ... or vice-versa. Others are sure to chime in -

No NOB Hoops are Not magnetic, nickel and brass are not magnetic. Ludwig did have brass and steel hoops on their transition period late/mid 60's period.1967ish
yep. ive even got an all original 64 pioneer with nickel over steel hoops. earliest that ive seen the nickel over steel in the keystone era.

Your tom mount you speak of must be a steel piece with nickel plating. Iron and steel are pretty much the only magnetic metals that I can recall. Brass, aluminum, zinc alloy (aka pot-metal), copper and chrome are non-magnetic. While your mount be a nickel finish, it is a plating and the base metal below is what is causing the magnet to stick, so by deduction, your mount must be steel under the nickel plating.
Nickel is indeed magnetic.

However I suspect that your tom mount is likely steel or possibly iron. Chrome will not stick to steel so in order to plate steel you have to first plate the piece in copper, then nickel and finally chrome. What you see is likely the nickel plate layer.

Since we're going to get technical about this, the Nickel that drum manufactures use is not magnetic since it is not pure nickel, but a blend of metals mostly copper.
