Most of the early '60s Ludwig kits I've seen have rack tom mounts with hex nuts although I've seen several with wing nuts. I'd appreciate it if one of you experts could verify which of the two was factory-issued on those kits.

I'm pretty sure hex nuts would have been standard for mounted toms and wing nuts standard for floor tom leg mounts.
Oldschool, the way I think it works is; tom mount and rail used hex bolt and special hex key and the BD spur mounts and tom leg mounts came with the wing nuts.

early 60's through early 65 used neither of those mounts. they used the mount like those that was rounded and smooth and had only a small ludwig script. they were cast and a threaded eye bolt went into the casting. they were used on the bass spurs,tom mounts and leg mounts and cymbal mounts.
the ones that you have shown are the 2nd and 3rd design of these types of mounts and were used spring 65ish and later.

My 13" rack tom is 4065, which would make it made in April of '65. It has the Ludwig hex bolt, as does the consolette mount. Everything else in the kit are wingnuts. This coincides with Mike's timeline.

I have seen many set's both ways hex nuts or wing screws. Also have seen them with a mix of wing and hex nuts.Maybe these sets were made on a friday??...Mikey

Also, the hex nuts didn't come into play until about 1968. From 1965-late 1967 they used wing nuts on the tom mount brackets as well. (I am speaking about the "second" design brackets and not the earlier cast design with internal threads as eluded to in a previous reply post)

thats my understanding as well, as far as the wing nut migrating into the hex nut and along those dates..
