Slingerland Bass Drum Question

Loading...

I was set up at the Pennsylvania Drum show over the weekend (Sorry but no pics other than the three I am posting here because I was too busy to take more) an a gentlemen brought me a 27.5" bass drum that I tucked and mounted a new head for in the parking lot. Judging from the single tention style tuning system that runs through the center mount eye hole I am assuming that the drum is pre 1936.

He had stripped what was left of the original paint off of the drum and removed the badge as well to be put back on later. What I found odd was that underneath the vent hole near the badge was what appears to be a serial number stamped into the shell which was not visible at all until the paint had been removed.

I was always under the impression that SLingerland didn't start using serial numbers on drums until the mid 1960's, almost 30 years later. Anyone here have any insight or thoughts on this? The number reads 102473 in case you can't make it out.

Looks to have been tacked on, possibly a Leedy@Strupe badge from '31 to '38?

That would tie in with VTM's Leedy rod lug observation.

Slingerland badges were mounted with a vent hole.....

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the interior of the shell before I mounted the head to dry, The guy that brought the drum said slingerland and I didn't even think about the fact that there was no vent hole, good catch on that one. The badge shape doesn't match any of the Leedy badges on my charts and the only Leedy & Strupe badges I have seen are round. The shape does match a Duplex badge but that one is from the 1960's so the hardware doesn't make sense.

The shell and the wooden hoops just do not look Slingerland at all.

I just looked at the link, I completely missed it the first time i read the post. The Leery & Stripe badges look about right. Thanks.

The drum sounded real good with the calfskin on and he is going to send pictures.when.he is done with it. I will post a pic when he finishes his restoration
