Hey all,

This thread is all about musical inspiration...I would like to see what makes this Vintage Drum Forum tick...Please post your inspirational song...

I will go first...

Anytime I need some inspiration in day to day living, this is the song I like to listen too...It was recorded in Montreal, Canada about 10 years ago...

Being a Canadian myself, I guess I would have to say that Justin Bieber is my all time favourite drummer, singer and performer! Anything he does is truly classic!

Hi guys,

Not always my favourite band, but the performance by U2 at the Superbowl Halftime show in 2002 has to be one of the most emotional shows ever. Often referred to a "the funeral for America", the tribute for the victims of 9-11 was so perfectly presented (IMO) that to this day I can barely watch it.

When music is properly done, it should stir feelings or emotions in people and bring them back to a moment in time or make them dream. I can't think of a better example. It's as if "Streets" was written for the circumstance of the day. America (and us Canadians too) needed a chance to feel good about something so soon after 9-11. That whole Superbowl almost didn't happen, but thank goodness it did.

Inspires me? well for drumming it has to be Ginger baker, he always thinks outside the box and plays rhythms that most of us have no clue about just love the guy....

Mike - Guys like Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell were 'jazz trained.' Along with guys like Bobby Columby and others, they were playing rock & roll but with a real jazz sensibility. I remember that time well. Up until 65' or so, a rock drummers job was just to keep a good beat and stay in the background. Drummers, like all the guys I just mentioned, helped to break the mold, along with all the rules and barriers for rock drummers. They made the drums an integral part of the music. They elevated the drummers role in a rock band. But what you're hearing, is their jazz chops! They brought the best parts of jazz; free improvisation, melodic playing, syncopation, poly-rhythms and some serious chops to rock and roll and they changed the music forever.

That's what you're hearing as "outside the box" when you listen to guys like Baker. Jazz training!
