Got a Line on a Ludwig Champagne Sparkle Set

Loading...

Hello all!

I’ll be upfront with you…ultimately I want to know what a fair value is for this set or what I should offer if I go and check them out…but first here are some details:

-Seller confirmed that all lugs, mounts, etc. are accounted for (complete)

-60’s Ludwig keystone set 12”, 13”, 16”, 22”

-Champagne sparkle wrap

-12” (add on) is late 60’s with natural/clear interior with re-rings

-13” & 16” are late ’66 and bass is early ‘67

-muffler in 16” is not correct (should be baseball bat)

-seller claims “Some dings and scratches, not collector grade” “wrap is tight with minimal fade”

-hoop missing some of the inlay

-in the picture with the bass you will see that it appears to be cut/drilled for a diamond plate mount (add on) that is off-center. The seller thinks it was originally a virgin bass drum as there are no holes for a rail consolette but this also doesn’t make sense if the set was in fact originally 13”, 16”, 22” and the 12” was added on there should have been a rail consolette unless the set was special ordered with a virgin bass. Correct?

I’m not too worried about the flaws as long as I can get them for a fair price which is where you guys come in

With the pictures below and what I have detailed above what do you think would be a fair price?

I also would want to make sure the 12” is not re-wrapped to match…would a clear interior drum with re-rings have the wrap built into the plies of the shell?

Thanks for the help!

First, let me address the 8x12.

From what you've described, this tom is definately a part of the transitional period. So yes, it's very possible that it is original. Ludwig went to the clear interior in late 1968, but didn't change the way the wrap was part of the joint until sometime in 1969. So, as far as the way the wrap is done it could be either way and still "original."

Second, the bass drum...

Yes, the idea of it being originally a "virgin" BD seems a little odd. However, there were drummers back in the day that used SD stands instead of tom mounts, and Ludwig was good about "special orders." So, what he told you IS possible. And, for what it's worth I've seen off-centered double mounts on Ludwigs before. I remember seeing a set in a music store in Topeka, Ks in the early 70s that looked about like what you have in this picture. On a NEW set.

Now, for my OPINION on value...

It depends upon what you plan on doing with it. If this is something you're planning on flipping you'll need to be careful. Personally, in this case (based upon the info I have) I wouldn't want to pay any more than $300. The wrap looks pretty scratched up, and it's not going to be easy to replace the missing BD hoop inlay. The ball-bat muffler ain't going to be cheap, either.

But... I used to own a set like this, only with 2 22" BDs. Bought it new in '71 (or maybe '72). I would LOVE to have one again, so I wouldn't be looking to flip but to keep and play. So... IF when you get there all of the lugs, mounts, etc. are indeed all there... maybe $500 tops? REMEMBER -- if this guy wants TOP dollar, he needs to fix it, complete it, and detail it himself.

DISCLAIMER -- this is all just my OPINION based upon the info available.

Man, I love the old champagne sparkle!!

BTW, if you do buy this, I do have a piece (appr. 7/8" by 44") that could make up some of your missing inlay! It may not be a perfect match, but probably close enough if used on the batter side.
