Rogers Pros, a little help please, Luxor, Power Tone, Celebrity, Holiday?

Loading...

I recently purchased a Rogers drum set. It's going to be a project. It looks like the wrap was removed and it appears to be painted black. The shells are in great shape. The interiors are gray, the bass drum has the original sticker which says Power Tone and Fullerton Ca., the floor tom has a smaller sticker with 1970 printed on it. Sizes are 22,12,16. The lugs are beavertail, the T-rods have been replaced and spurs are also replaced. Here are my questions,

1 - Any suggestions on where to buy original or similar wrap?

2 - What was the difference between the different models? Power tone, Luxor, Cleveland, Dayton, Holiday, etc.

3 - Did the Quality of Rogers drums change after CBS or after the move to CA?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Based on the info I've gathered, you don't want a pre-1964 Rogers; thats when they had the 'bread&butter' lugs. Cleveland, then Dayton and then Fullerton were all 'Holiday' til 1970 when they changed the all the drums to 'Powertone'.

I have a mixed kit- my kick drum is a 20" Dayton Holiday from '66-68 and the toms are Fullerton Holiday from '68-69. SO '69 was the last year of Fullerton Holidays, 70-71 were Fullerton Powertone and then '72 to 74 I believe was "9/72". After that they switched to the "Big R" Rogers and the quality began to decline from there.

Your kit is pre-Big R so theyre good drums. I would maintain all the original hardware to the best of your ability.

'64 to '70 Rogers were all great drums! Dennis Wilson played em, so that's good enough for me.

&

After years of Rogers and Camco he switched to the acrylic Zickos and then Yamaha.

I would maintain all the original hardware to the best of your ability.

I've already begun shopping on ebay for "original" hardware. I'm going to replace the T rods and claws, and I'm def going to re-wrap.

One more question; does the shell construction or make-up change with different models? Like is Holiday or Power Tone made with the same shells?

Powertone Drums, Holiday Drums, Luxor Drums... same shells

Powertone Snare, Dynasonic Snare, Tower Snare, Luxor Snare.... same shells.

The difference in drums is either the era or the prep for hardware. Powertone drum is the same as a Holiday drum, the difference is the era. A Luxor was the same shell prepped for a less expensive hardware package. It is not a lesser drum.

On snares, differences in hardware, number of lugs, type of throw off, and snare bed prep.

earlier 60s drums were three ply. Five ply from the mid sixties to the introduction of the 9/72 tag. 1973 catalog shows three ply shells. In 1975 for the introduction of the Big R badge, five ply shells to 1979, then 8 ply all maple to the end in 1984.
