Got the Evans G1 on and tuned. Not as much "thump" but more "crack" and definitely livens up the drum. Already had an Evans hazy 300 on the snare so I left it alone.

Sorry Beat, I just realized that it could appear that I'm jacking your thread which wasn't my intention.

Hey Mick - no problem mate, I'm interested to hear what that head choice is like!

Cheers

So... I finally got to play out with it!!

yes months of waiting ended last night when I played the Gretsch kit with the Ally snare. I put a new coated ambassador on top and a hazy underneath. It sounds awesome!! Medium tuning it sounds really full, quite dry but round. Not what I expected (which is why I don't own any steel snares ;-) ) at all! Its not loud, but that makes it perfect for smaller venues and it fits perfectly with the sound of the rest of the kit.

I'm really pleased.

Thanks for all your interest!

Pic of the homecoming below.....:-)

Cheers All!

Wow!! Nice snare for such little $$. I like the wrap on your "junk store" kit. Amazing what you can find in a junk store.

Good score!

I got one of these for $150 a couple of months ago in NOLA. I'm curious does your tag say 4108 or 4108T? I looked for other drums like it but all the ones I found had 4108 without the "T". I've been told(on this forum) mine is from '73 and that the "T" on my model# stands for "with tone control". Yours is the first one I've seen that has tone control too. So, that would help confirm the information about the "T" if yours has it too. Thanks.

I'm away from this drum at the moment as it's in the UK, but as far as I can recall - & a close look at my pics, mine only says 4108 by the looks - maybe the tone control was added later on mine or it was a good old "friday afternoon" drum and the guy writing the model no just couldn't be arsed!!!

I think we both got good deals!

Enjoy!!

That is nice - not moved back to anything roundbadge yet, but would love to. For me the coated Ambassador is the only snare head thats ever given me the snare sound I love. I tried the hazy, and even that didnt sound quite right. Here's a pic of the 70's kit I found in the junk shop that I paid $300 for - minus Gretsch snare. I've been using the Slingerland '52 maple snare you see in the second pic with it, which works really nicely and is very versatile, but I'm really looking forward to hooking the Gretsch's up!!

FANTASTIC kit..but gotta ask..

why do you store your laundry in the BD?Hmmmm

That's a sweet drum! I just picked one of these up recently. I might have outdone your deal because I paid $0 for mine ;) Out of curiosity did you have any problems fitting standard heads on your drum?
