Did any drum manufacturers ever do acrylic AND wood shells? Last viewed: 16 hours ago

I don’t know what made me think of this but I recall several years ago (10+) stripping down what I believed to be an old Ludwig 16” floor tom that had contact paper on it. Upon removal of the contact paper I noticed the actual outer ply of the shell was ACRYLIC and orange in color and the interior ply was wood, almost like a vistalite-wood hybrid. Anyone ever encounter something like that? The drum had Ludwig large classic lugs and the P1216 leg mounts. I guess the shell maybe wasn’t necessarily Ludwig but an import or other brand drilled for Ludwig hardware? Anyone ever see something like what I’m trying to describe. Sorry I don’t have pics but the drum is long gone however, it always intrigued me.

I don't know of any Ludwig drums made like that. But in 1980 Ludwig did cover the vistalite shells in chrome also black and white these three colors would have the B&O badges on them.Ludwig-[1980} also had a line of drums called Combo these had black and silver badges on them they came in all the vista's colors they had most of these shells were 22,12,13,16.They did this to used up the vista's shells.....Mikey

It looks like Battlefield Drums makes a hybrid shell with acrylic and wood. It doesn't look like what you describe, though. Theirs look to be 3 separate bands, 2 wood and 1 acrylic, that are stacked together to make the drum. Top and bottom 3rd's of drum are wood, with an acrylic centerpiece. They are a custom drum company so maybe they are capable of making what you describe. Here's a link for them:

Look at their drumset gallery. You have to scroll down pretty far, but eventually you'll see sets with these hybrid shells.

Just wanted to ad a side note on these battlefielddrums. At the shop O.C.D.P. we were the first ones to come out with these types of shells i made these shells at the shop in three types. One was wood-acrylic-wood,two was acrylic outer shell with a wood shell inside-#3 was acrylic-wood-acrylic...These shells were made from about 2002-2010.....Mikey
