I just picked up a early 70's Supra with an unusual badge. It's silver with no serial number but has 585 engraved on it. I thought that the blue and olive had worn off but on closer inspection it appears it was never there. I checked the grommet and it does not appear tampered with. It came with an oyster blue kit with serial starting in the 900K range. Any ideas or has anyone ever seen one of these? Nothing unusual about the snare as it looks like a stock Supra.

My guess is that it had Blue/Olive at one time, & the numbers are inventory numbers (for a school, institution etc.,) You can still see the shadow of the dividing line where the colors would have started.

I compared it to my other tags including my other supras and there's no outline for the b/o. Could be they forgot to paint it is all. Not sure what the 585 means but I think you're right on the institution like a big school order or something back in the day. Main thing is it still sounds like a supra should.

You can't polish off the serial #, it is stamped in. I have seen these badges on some stainless steel Ludwigs. Some have stated they are endorser/prototype badges.
one more thing to consider. remember those september '70 ludwig drums? many of those were considered made during another transition period for ludwig. many also had no serial numbers on the badges.

The Colorless badges for Ludwig Stainless steel was a Special Request order for one unique Octaplus kit. The story is told on the Ludwig Stainless Steel Drum Website. These badges were not put on standard equipment. ( Also, the earlier "transition" badges did not have serial numbers, but had the Blue/Olive color)

I don't know about that this guy has a statement that bugs me to no end, he states he was at the ludwig plant when Dick Gerlach retired?? thats awfully strange to me considering I walked out with him Dick Gerlach to the parking lot to his car that very day?? also I was an original member of the stainless steel society I don't know this guy at all?? our president of the stainless steel society lives in Miami florida, and has since divorced and sold all his s/s drum?? the ludwig factory is an hours drive from my house. also this guy came on the forum and I addressed these very issues with him, never received a reply or he never posted again on this forum?
Sounds like you've got some inside information. (according to his blog, there were Stainless Steel prototypes made w/ plain silver badges w/ only "Ludwig", & a hand etched serial number on the badges. Is it possible that the OP snare is Stainless Steel ? or got one of these badges ? )

Wow some interesting comments. I don't think this drum is stainless steel though otherwise a magnet would stick to it. Standard ludalloy me thinks. The badge definitely is silver and there were no previous serial numbers other than the one engraved. I wonder if there are other types of uncommon Luddy badges that pop up from time to time?
