Ludwig Bass Drum Surprise Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Some of us were discussing things you find in Pawn shops and on CL. I had seen this add on CL a couple days ago for some old drums but there was a Ludwig bass drum in the lot and this morning I called the seller and asked if he would part with just that Bass drum. It looked to have all the hardware and a virgin bass drum. I offered a few bucks for it and he took it. THinking I would use the hardware or restore it. When I got there it was wraped in a yellow thick something and it looked black underneath. I could tell by the inside and the Legs it was a early 60's late 50's. No extra holes. Used to have a railmount and cymbal mount. Hoops were pretty much gone. I offered him even a few more dollars less and he took it. When I got it home and started looking under the outer wrap I could see black with colored sparkles. I also noticed it still had the intact gromett. This outer wrap was some king of wood veneer that was just held on by the hardware. I almost had a real prize but there are some issues. I think it might can be saved if I can find a patch of the original wrap. "Fiesta" ?? The drum is dated 1954 or 64. I can't quite make out the year. I am thinking 64 with the white inside and the style of cymbal mount. Pre serial #Badge. IT is a nice in round drum. Bearing edges seem ok. What to do with this surpriseing find. It could be patched if I could find the wrap as it is not faded really. To bad the whole wrap wasn't there. weird how the ends where the wrap is gone looks. Like it was lazered or burned off but no burn marks. Sorry , I need to figure out thumbnails. Also thats just a blur in the pic. The wrap is fine on top.

Actually not a bad idea but maybe someone out there has some of that wrap or someone needs this drum to complete a set. Hopefully someone will see it and want it. I am not going to try and get rich on it. I have no use for it and I don't want to take that wrap off. I think it can be saved.

that wrap is galaxy. should be 64 instead of 54. one of the harder wraps to find. great job on finding that!

Black Galaxy is no longer manufactured. Trust me, I looked! The modern version is nothing like the vintage version. It's matching paint job or nothing. Nice find. Too bad about the wrap.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Well I am flattered to be in the "knows what they are doing" catagory. I do pretty good when it comes to finishing a drum set with a new color but matching an existing finish is a whole different ball game. First thing that come to mind is the difference in thickness. Assuming you did match the color and the flakes, do you build up the missing wrap area with veneer to get it even with the existing wrap? Do you cut the edges of the existing wrap in a straight line in order to creat a nice butt joint?

You could get the background color very close but the flakes would be a challeng to say the least. Getting the colors of the flakes to match would be the problem. Then it would be very hard to get them sprayed on with the proper consistency. Certainly would be a challeng. I think finding another drum and graphing some wrap from it to use as a patch would be the best way to go but sounds like there is not too many black galaxy drums sitting around to do it with. John is right, a good auto painter. Contact some of the car clubs or go to a car show and look at some of the paint jobs then talk to the owners of the cars and get advice of who to use. You need a truly "custom painter" Good luck, Il be watching this thread!

I sent Jack Lawton a email with pics and he just got back to me.

He said he did not have enough to cover the 14"x 16" area I need.

He suggested patching it with black gloss but also said Delmar would make a sheet for me but it would be $500.00. So unless anyone want's to go in on a sheet or I get a vintage tom and floor tom to also wrap, I doubt I can do that. I just sent a email to Forks Drum Shop to there restorer Clay, to see how close the Gretsch reissue galaxy would match, and if I can even get a piece of it. Or something as close as possible. If not I am going to put the shell up for sell. Probably on ebay.

I just started "watching" these out of intrigue. Not gonna bid by any means, then came across this thread. Maybe they'll be of some help? The wraps look to be in good condition.
