need help dating this kit/snare

Loading...

Hello first post here.... I just bought this kit

someone painted the interior purple!!! so no dates on the inside!

but they look to be 3 ply with rings

however someone has also taken of the badges.. and put them back on

the 20" kick drum has the older gulf wing style of spurs

So I am assuming this would make the kit earlier than 1969?

also the toms have the blue/olive badges but the numbers work out to be from about 76...

the snare has a keystone badge and again the badge appears to have been removed and put back on.. the grommet is chrome-ish and way too big (i will post pics)

the 12 rack tom has the mini lugs whereas the other toms all have large classics

sizes are 14 snare with classic throw off and baseball bats (with white felt)

12 rack tom with mini lugs and round grey muffler

13 rack tom with large classic lugs and round grey muffler

16 floor tom with large classic lugs and round grey muffler

and 20 kick with gulf wing spurs and ringo style creeper on the front rim

I was wondering if at all possible these drums could have been keystone badges from the 60's???

my plan is to put keystone badges on all the toms and bass drum to match the snare

I have coated ambs on them now and they sound really good!

any help would be appreciated I'm just looking for more info-thanks

What you have is a 70's kit with a (possibly) 60's jazzfest snare drum. The snare drum is questionable because the badge grommet has been tampered with. Baseball bat muffler is from 63'.

Safe to say it's a nice 70's kit. The jazzfest, whether from the 60's, or 70's, is a great sounding snare drum. Tune it up and enjoy it.

Too many great drums to list here!

first off you cant really faux keystone theses as to the interiors and wrap id keep them the way they r and enjoy the b/o badges r starting to be worth more

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

didn't the jazz fest come with a p38 strainer?

this one seems to have a classic strainer on it.

please pardon my ignorance, I'm just starting to learn.

and the bass drum since it has the gullwing style BD spurs, would the badge be a blue and olive one?

thanks for your help

That would make it a Super Classic model, if the strainer is original to the drum.please pardon my ignorance, I'm just starting to learn.and the bass drum since it has the gullwing style BD spurs, would the badge be a blue and olive one? This is merely an assumption, but it could be a '69 bass drum on which gull wing spurs were installed - before Ludwig went to the others. They started using B/O badges in '69.thanks for your help

Also, mini classics on the 12 and large classics on the rest is correct.

I hope this helps you.

Welcome to the forum!

I would guess someone may have just put whatever badges they could find on. I have seen keystone badged BDs with the newer curved spurs during the 1969 Ludwig transitional period, but hadn't seen a B/O badge with the folding spurs. That's just what I've seen... who knows what my have happened during that period though.

I had a Silver sparkle set of Ludwigs out of 1969 once. Altough I didn't know all of the set's history, I was pretty sure it had always been a set. The BD, 12 and 13 toms all had B/O badges, and the FT had a keystone. So, who really knows?

Purple interiors? Wow. Good luck with that.

And BTW -- there is an eBay seller called "Myoldkentuckydrums" that sells reproductions grommets, if you're interested inchanging what you have to more "correct" ones...

thank you all... Bill

I am aware of old kentucky drums on ebay and have purchased from him before.

Yes someone did paint the interior a violet and there is no way I am going to be removing the paint from inside all four drums. yes the BD and toms all have blue olive badges and have obviously been tampered with....there is a huge chrome grommet in the center of each badge that just doesn't look right. I think I will change them all over to some type of repro keystone badge and never sell the set...

I have a 70's butcher block ludwig kit (someone put yamaha tom mounts on that and drilled xtra holes!)

so I think it would be cool to have a 60's ludwig kit... in addition to the 70's kit!

thank you for all of your advice!

remember, friends don't let friends drill holes!!!!
