Stand organizer?

Loading...

I've owned 30+ vintage kits over the past 21 years, and most of them came with old hardware. My hardware to kit ratio must be 3:1 at least.

I used to sell it on eBay, but a good chunk of vintage hardware isn't worth the time or hassle. I now keep the good stuff and the rest goes to Goodwill.

I like it a lot! I had a few problems. The 8 thin wall pipes dont hold up very good with much weight on them. I have 2 1'16" cables with turn buckles holding the tubes straight. I should have got thicker cable. THese tubes filled get very heavy.

Nice work!

What about hanging them? I was thinking along the lines of two parallel bars about 1" or 1.5" inches apart, near the celilng. That way, you could collapse/telescope the stand into itself (all pieces together) and then hang the stands by the tilter end (cymbal) or basket end (snare). Hi hats could be hung at the "cup" where the bottom cymbal goes.

I haven't tried this, but I think it would work. As long as whatever you are using to support the stands (empty {non-functioning} metal gas or water pipes, or very strong wire cables etc) is sturdy enough.

Anyone try that before? At least the stands would all be in a "line" and wouldn't take up much room. Maybe they could even be stored above something else, like a washer or dryer, assuming the ceiling is high enough.

You could also kill two birds with one stone. I use a metal firewood rack (lined with pipe insulation for padding) to hold my cymbals. I have over 100 on there, and there is room for plenty more, and the sturdy steel frame easily supports the weight of the cymbals (13" and larger fit on the parallel bars). Since it's designed to keep your firewood off the ground, there is about 8" or so of clearance below the rack. I store my extra stands underneath the rack. It works great (the floor is carpeted). As a bonus, if you see a cymbal that you haven't played in a while, there is a stand right there to put it on and have fun! I even put a Vater clamp on drumstick holder on the rack tubing at the top, so I always have sticks close by too!

Just my :2Cents:

Good idea, roto toms have a aluminum bar they attach to. This type of bar might work for what your suggesting. The onlt drawback I can think of is, you would have to slideany stands out to get to one in the middle of the rack.

I have these tubes at my shop. The are 12" diameter X 30" long. Im going to bring some home and put em in the attick or someplace. I can fit any size stand in these. The ludwig atlas stands take up a lot of room.

Sonotube, like the cardboard tubes you have posted, may be an option. Sonotube is used as a concrete form for creating columns and pillars. I don't know if they make anything small enough to be really reasonable.

Currently all my stands are in road cases and assigned to various kits. It makes prepping a rental kind of a pain as I feel the need to pull out every stand and inspect it and generally have to replace missing felts and wing nuts. (by the way, what is everyone doing with those anyway?). Of course, we occasionally need to add or subtract a piece for a particular purpose If I can figure out where to put a rack like this I will build a tube wall as well as it would be much simpler to simply pull out what you need for a particular project.
