50's Slingerland floor tom legs in 70's style leg brackets? Last viewed: 22 hours ago

Loading...

Hi everyone.

I posted in the Wanted forum that I'm looking for three wingnut style Slingerland floor tom leg brackets, so I can swap out my push button style brackets on my 50's kit.

From a bit of forum searching, I'm under the impression that the hole width is the same for the push button and wing nut style brackets (2 1/4 inches).

What I'm not sure about, however, is if the straight legs that come with my push button brackets will work in the newer wing nut brackets. If anyone can confirm or deny this, I would be very grateful. It would be good to know if I should be hunting for brackets and legs.

If anyone has a good source for the brackets who will ship to Canada, please let me know.

Cheers!

Sorry! One more question: has anyone had any luck finding a modern floor tom bracket (Gibraltar, whatever...) that is the same screw width as the Slingerland brackets?

I'm happy to buy some new after market brackets to use so I'm able to use this floor tom without worrying about it falling apart on me mid-song. :)

Cheers!

Cool!

Thank you for the confirmation, and for sharing the lovely picture.

If it's "you show me yours, I'll show you mine" then here's mine:

I just picked up a rail consolette, so I can take the t-bar mount off and restore the original look of the kit. The old owner decided to get a 2nd rack tom in the 60's and put the middle mount in.

Yes they work! I've swapped them out on three 14x14 floor toms and getting ready to do it on a fourth.baby crawl2

Very nice!

Care to share your source for the parts? I'm not having much luck with eBay so far.

Cheers!

Got all of mine off eBAY...

Recently saw a conversion that took the guts of a Ludwig mount and put it inside the button style mount. I think the only change made was to enlarge the button hole to fit the Ludwig eye bolt. Simple and it works! Might be able to pick up the bolt and wing nut at a hardware store.

If you want to keep'em original, why not just fix the Push Button lugs? Here's what I did:

Remove the rod "clip" from the lug

At the original 90* bend, bend it in more just a little over 90*

About 1/4" up from the bend, add a slight second bend so that the part the button screws into is parrallel with the inside wall of the lug, (you may have to trial-fit the clip in the lug with the spring & rod a couple of times to get the bends correct). If you make the bends to great, the clip will touch against the spring and will not operate properly either.

Re-assemble and enjoy your firm-holding Push-Button Legs!
The problem with these dudes is that when the clip hole gets some wear, it needs more angle to hold the leg in position. The worn clip touches the inside of the lug wall which will not allow it to to fully "lock" onto the leg rod.

I was going to fabricate some new clips with a slightly smaller i.d. hole, but decided to try this first with good success.
