The art of Cross Sticking Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Please listen to the short clip featuring Chris Layton of SRV & Double Trouble playing Hendrix's version of Little Wing. How does he achieve that really crisp "crack"?

I try but mine does not sound like that. I'm positioning the tip of the stick 2" from the rim, grasp the stick with fingers only at the 2 o'clock position. Does the size of the stick make a big difference?

Thanks.

Hit right above a lug..

It's supposed to be louder that way...

Yes the size and material will affect the sound as will position.

Both responses so far are on the money. Hickory (hard-wood) used over a lug with the stick only a quarter length beyond the rim. You need to catch the meat at the butt-end of the stick to get that nice, solid woody note.

Experiment! You'll find the sweet spot on the stick that gives you that great click.

Too many great drums to list here!

I've been messing around with drums for almost 44 years, and have gone to countless vintage drum shows/clinics/concerts..

Hope I have learned SOMETHING in that time!flowers2

Solid shells give more of a crack also, I find the sweet spot to be right next to the lug, not directly on top of it.

Great advise thus far.

Will add this tho:

Each drum has its own sweet spot - sometimes if I'm required to play cross stick in a set I will mark it on the skin.
