Anyone have one of these vintage snares...Ludwig nickel over brass? These seem hard to find, but I'm interested in checking one out. Would love to find a 6.5 version somewhere. No telling how much it would cost.

ive got an early 20's ludwig 2 piece heavy shell 5x14 8 lugger. ive got the original hoops on it with replacement clips so that i can tune it to today standards. it is by far the best sounding drum that i have ever played.
i too would like a 6.5 but in a 6 lug layout...

I have the 6.5 6 lug. It is a 2 piece shell. It weighs a ton and the sound is very big and open. One of my favorite drums that can work any room.

6 1/2 X 14 " Ludwig & Ludwig , 6 lugs. This is waiting in line to be the next one cleaned & set up. Note the large bearing edge folded back to the shell. This one had a heating element that was a large rod extending in to the center. Original old snares w/ 12 wires, (stamped, Pat. 12). Hoops, hooks, rods & strainer painted silver. Top hoop is stamped "Ludwig & Ludwig Chicago".
I dont have a pic on my computer but you can find one on a thread titled the ugly duckling. Its way back on page 15.

How are the snares on this thing? I hear they are gut wires. Just wondering how that functions...and if one is able to obtain a sensitive tone (i.e. buzz rolls and quiet playing) with gut wire. I've been really thinking about one lately...
This is my Ludwig Ludwig 1924 10 lug 5x14" It originally came with calf skinheads and gut snares. I removed them and of course I'm storing them for orignality. But have installed Remo vintage Emperor on top, remo ambassador snare side, and puresound snare wires. It's one of my all time fav's. I owned a 6 1/2x14 6 lug all metal model I didn't care for it. Sold it to a bud of mine.

That's good to know that you can change out the wires. I was under the impression that it was not possible...but then again, I'm just now learning about these drums. I'm leaning towards the 6.5 version myself...They aren't cheap. When the time is right, I may ask around to see if one is up for grabs.
