Black Beauty vs Supraphonic Last viewed: 17 hours ago

What are the relative merits of these two snares? Is one generally preferred over the other? Are the modern versions very different than vintage? I have an opportunity to purchase a newer model of one of these from the owner of both. Thanks for some input.

These are very broad questions about two of the most-discussed snares in history. There are as many opinions on the answers as there are drummers.

Mike, first, Welcome to VDF.

Play them both yourself. Don't base your decision on anybody else's opinion of them. Bottom line: buy the one -you- like best. Opinions don't cost anybody anything. You're the one who will be digging deep. You make the call.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

As mentioned above - preference is up to you. IMO - If I was in the market to buy - I'd go for a new Black Beauty - I think they sound great. I have a new one and it sounds better than my late 70s BB. Ludalloy Supraphonic - I'd go vintage. The new ones probably sound fine, but I like the mojo of the old ones, and unlike older BB's, they're still affordable. Then there's the Acrolite... ;)

I have a Supra but I would love to own a Black Beauty too. When I was looking for a Supra, the vintage prices were ridiculous. I ended up buying a newer 6.5 " on Craigslist for a great price. I cannot hear a difference between a vintage and newer Supra. In a blind test with the same heads and tune, I dont think you would be able to tell them apart. All I saw that I was getting from a vintage purchase was peeling chrome and a higher price. I would have preferred a snare from the same era as my shells but it wasnt worth the additional cost to me.

I like the way you think!!! I should have known I would get plenty of support for my addiction on this forum. Thanks to all for the input, I may end up with both if I can get the price right.
