Also to add to my post above this, Here is a pic of a Remo White Coated Emperor 13". I mounted this head the Regular Emperor the same day as the 14" Vintage Emperor, I've laid waste to both of these heads. Bought them both at the same time along with some others that I've not used yet.

YIKES!!! I could almost give the 14 a pass because a snare takes a serious beating, but that shouldn't happen to a head on a tom in 5 days.

I've never called Remo, but if they're as user friendly as Aquarian/Roy Burns, I would think they'd at least listen to your complaint...if not send you some more heads.

I hope the others last longer.

I'm no guru, just a vintage drum junkie!

Okay, so is this not "normal" behavior for Remo Emperors? I too use the Vintage Remo on the snare and my example has been played hard for about 3-4 months. Hardly any wear.

But the tom is another matter. Put on the same time and notice more pronounced wear. So this is not normal?

I'm new to Remo Emperors.

Yeah Mike as you can see from the pics I've laid waste to these two heads and I have another Remo emperor on another tom that I did this to also. the two 13" tom heads I did this to them in less than an hour really!!! I have an Ambassador head on the 16" floor tom and it's still good to go, and it's 5 months old?? go figure!! In one of the above post someone mentioned that the underlying film is now clear instead of opaque and obviously thats now true you can see my mahogany shell through the worn out spot on the 13" head. John, man you might be right, I surely hope my beloved Remo is not cutting corners!!

Ludwig and the others used to buy up surplus auto paint for their drums. Cheaper than using custom/proprietary paint colors. There may have been an attractive price on a load of paint and they (REMO) deviated from the 'norm.'

They are a reputable old company. I'm sure the complaints have been pouring in and hopefully corrective action will be taken and things will go back to normal in terms of product quality. They're in business to make money, not lose it. They'll fix it or risk losing a loyal following.

I'm an Evans man myself. Switched away from REMO years ago.

John, I've called Remo from time to time their customer service is Top Rate, I'll just ask them if they had a bad batch or run of heads, they have admitted it to me before, I like Evans heads to the G1 and G2's are tops. And their coating last for a Looong time. as does Ludwigs

That's exactly the kind of wear I'm talking about on my skins. If I go back and compare, I've got skins that were played for a year before they looked as bad as mine do now from 3 hours.

I've let the Remo rep in Australia know of this thread, hopefully Remo can sort out the problem before too many customers are lost.
