I have an 11pc Wellington/Pearl set I inherited from my Dad (I still have not played on a set I like as much as I like this one). He worked for the guy at a place called "Jacks Drum and Guitar Shop" which I think is still floating around somewhere here in SLC. I will ask him for some more info on it and see what he can remember. I do recall him saying what the other guys have been saying. They are just Pearl shells re-wrapped with wellingtons name on them.
Wellington Custom Built Drums
Unfortunately, Jack Anderson (Jack's Drum and Guitar Shop) passed away a while ago, and AFAIK, the shop passed with him.
Everyone is speaking of Wellington's as a "kit" or shells, etc....what about the snare drums? I recently purchased a Wellington "PEARL" 14 X 6 STEEL/CHROME SNARE DRUM. I would like to know if any body has info on the snares? I saw where the sizes were "customized(hence the 6" instead of 5 or 5.5) but are they too just Pearls with his name on them? The one I ordered (ebay) shows "PEARL" on a sticker in the shell. Is this ligit? Does anyone know? I am new to the forum, but I think this is great. THANKS!
Does anyone know about this particular snare drum? I find the lugs quite unique, kinda resembling a Sonor, but not quite. INFO anyone?
Here's another I own that I have NO idea what I have. Any knowledge, or even guesse(educated) would be welcomed!
First your set is a rare set to come by this is the second set i have seen..Yes your set is made by Pearl wood/fiberglass shells,by the photo of the inside of bass drum that would date your set 1974-75 the first ones Pearl[1972-73] made had the fiberglass ply did not go to the edge of the drum, yours have the fiberglass going all the way to the edge of the drum that would date it to74-75..Pearl stoped making these drums in the first part of 1976 when they went to a all fiberglass shell...It's my understanding when Pearl made these drums they sold them under Pearl's name but also sold them to a music store chain in Canada and sold them under the Wellington name too about 1976 but like i said it's a Pearl set all the way same tom mount set-up same claws and T-rods,same bass legs[the missing legs are going to be hard to fine] are they the small rounded ones about 1 3/4" around at top??...As far as the parts you are missing i have most of them T-rods ,claws, tom mount arm i may have the bass plate too i have to check i know i have single ones not sure if i have anymore double ones...Also Wellington-[Pearl} also made a vista-lite sets too, check out the photos this one was on C/L for 400.00 some time ago...Mikey
I have a 10 piece or 9 pieces of the blue plexiglass or vistalite bottomless drums. I bought them from a guy in Utah around 1980. They were custom built by a guy named John but I can't remember his last name. I have two 22" bass drums and would like to find a 26" base or bigger. Has anyone found this guy or know where he can be found?
Wow-- somewhere along the line, the 'update' notifications quit showing up - there are a lot of posts on here since the last time I was here. hvirg, thank you, for that information, that is a LOT more information than I had expected to find! Thank you!!!
I'm giving these drums another push to completion finally - found another complete Pearl kick on ebay, no spurs, t-rods are different than these, but appear much more period-correct for the other present hardware. May never know which style it actually left the shop with, but I'll keep both sets with it, just for posterity... I scabbed together a set of spurs (pulled off a spare "Pulse" kick, plugged right in like they belonged there... bonus!) Guessing the tom-arm that I've got won't fit the 'new' kick-mount, but I'll cross that bridge as needed (mine has two different size hex shafts, all the ones I've seen in pics are the same size top and bottom) ---- Still in the market for floor-tom mounts and legs, but I've got 'em band-aided enough to function anyway. If ADHD doesn't get the best of me again, I'll try to get a pic posted when the "new" kick shows up and pukes out the parts I need... hopefully. Regardless, thanks again, lots of great info here!
And thanks to this recent discovery on this thread, I was able to do a bit more internet-stalking and found this little pair of gems. Kinda hard to read - damaged font from quick scanning, I presume. Google-Earth'ing that address is 'iffy' -- I'm guessing between then and now, Salt Lake City changed their street numbering or something (goes from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 500th, 600th, etc...) Best guess on my part would be 1965 South 1100th E, which currently is a post office. Was a vacant lot in 1970, but could have been a shop in the alley or something, really couldn't tell that much. But a bit more perspective on the offerings, anyway. Also found an obit for 'John "Jack" Wellington Oldham' from March of '92, which seems to tie ~some~ of the name discrepancies together anyway.
