I was wondering if I could get a price on what my set is worth. It's a 1965 Slingerland Gene Krupa Deluxe in Black Diamond Pearl. The tom's have new fyberskins and new emperor resos. Shells are in very good shape, minor scratches there is also some minor rusting of tensions rods.
Any ideas?

Could you post some pics of your kit for us. but the original price quote would be for a players grade kit, not a good condition kit.

It's in better shape than a players set. But not top quality.
I paid $700 shipped for my '58/59 WMP Slingerland kit, which came with 22/13/16 and no snare. It was missing 10 original BD T-rods and the 13" sticksavers, so I've got another $150-200 in correct parts and sandpaper/paint for the BD hoops. I'm OK with what I paid for it. Some others might not have paid that much, but the wrap looks like the kit was stored very well - very little yellowing, very few minor scratches and 2 or 3 small dings (one very small ding went through the wrap - about the size and shape of the paretheses you see here).
I hope this helps you value your kit. Someone is likely to say they wouldn't have sunk the money I have into the kit - and I welcome all opinions, as I, like you, don't truly know the value of the kit and would love to know.

In my experience, a 3 piece 60's slingerland set (be it 12/16/22, 13/16/22, or 13/16/20) is generally worth:
-In the $500 range in playeable but cosmetically worn condition, perhaps with some cosmetic drill holes or aftermarket tom brackets/spurs. Kits in this rage, I think, are generally worth a $1000 total investment if you need to completely disassemble them, clean up the shells/edges/hardware, replace missing components, fill holes from previous mounts, and install new heads. I often see kitso n eBay that fit this description.
-$600-$800 in nice, reasonably collectable with no extra holes, other brand hardware, or shell damage but with scuffs, wrap crack, bits of rust, dings on the hoops, etc. Kits in this range should generally be ready to play with perhaps the addition of new heads and a good cleaning. Most of the Slingerland kits I see on Craigslist fall into this range.
-$800-? in collector's grade, minty condition with little to no wear on the wrap and bright nickel or chrome hardware with all original T rods and claws, hoops, etc. At our drum shop, there was a truly mint Chicago badge Slingerland 4 piece 13/16/22 and a 14x5" RK snare all in BDP. It went for $1500 and needed nothing but a pair of sticks.

Thanks for the info, that's good to know. That makes me feel better about the money I've put into my late 50s kit, and what I'll be putting into my "new" 60s kit.

I believe that when it comes to bringing a vintage kit up to gig-worthy specifications, it isn't about the dollar amount spent, it's about how logicically those dollars are being invested. If you spent $1000 restoring a kit but you get all new Stick Savers, all new tension rods, all new lug inserts, new professionally cut edges, and everything needed to bring that kit into the 21st century... well that's priceless because there's no modern shell that will recreate the tone of a 50 year aged maple-popular-maple drum at any price.

I agree! That's the way I approached the whole thing. I don't mind putting a little more money than I should into either of my kits because, like you said, nothing on the markey today is made like these kits. Besides, they will pay for themselves in gig money probably within a year if my bands stay as busy as our schedules are now.
Just for clarification, though, my late 50s kit is mahogany/poplar/mahogany and the late 60s kit is maple/poplar/mahogany. ;) I think liatnor's kit would also be maple/poplar/mahogany.
