Drum Rewraps...give me the scoop! Is it worth it? Last viewed: 3 seconds ago

Does anyone have experience with having their drums rewrapped? How much should I expect that to cost?

Here's the deal. I have a few 60s Ludwig kits that I'm going to keep "as is." But, one day I'd sort of like another vintage 3-ply ludwig kit with a 24" bass drum in a green sparkle wrap. So, I was even thinking of finding a good deal on a 60s Ludwig set in the specific sizes I want...then getting someone to do a rewrap in my desired finish. I wouldn't be concerned so much with resell value, but I'd still want it to maintain a vintage look. Also, would you be able to keep the original badges intact (i.e. blue olive badge)?

There is a local guy here selling some 70s "Chrome over Wood" Ludwigs...

I'm wondering if these could be rewrapped? I'd want to rewrap them in a sparkle finish. I'm assuming this can be done, but not sure if any folks here have experience with this type of thing...

It can be done, but typically, chrome over wood is really hard to remove. If you are not careful, you can pull plies of wood with the wrap.

Yes to your question about preserving the original badges. An experienced and well equipped person will have a tool to remove and reinstall the badges after the re-wrap leaving a new nicely crimped grommet.

Wrap is expensive for a kit that size so be sure you factor that into the price you are willing to pay for a kit in the first place. Clearly you are better off if you can get a cheaper price on drums which obviously need re-wrapping. But if the kit you seek in the sizes you want appears in the wrong color...

As others have said COW might be harder to get off. That means potentially having to pay a bit more to get the shells filled and sanded.

Agreed 100%. I NEVER rewrap drums that are in good shape, even orphans. Someone-somewhere-somtime is going to want/need it.

BUT -- If the wrap is in bad shape, someone-somewhere-sometime is going to be looking for a good player's kit and don't care (as much) about the vintage "mojo."

Boy, that's the truth. The problem is, though, the "garage sale" or "attic" finds of these are usually so rusty (and otherwise damaged) that removing the wrap is necessary (my experience, anyway!).

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like chrome over wood is tough to work with. This deal may not happen because the guy thinks this COW is rare and he's asking 1750 with snare, but he will sell without snare. Still too much probably, yet it's the sizes I'm looking for...24, 12, 13, 16.

Yep, I'll chime in on this one... Like what has been said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. COW stuff is always iffy to get off anyway, and the karma and mojo hits could be smelly.

There are loads of orphan drums out and about that have really bad wrap, or have been painted beyond repair. Those shells are cheap generally. Use those to fix up. Yeah, it may be a real Frankenstein kit, but you'll be blessed by the drum deities for putting a bunch of poor unemployed drums back into their intended use.

Heck, do it right and you may even find rainbows and unicorns camped in your front yard!
