Vingtage Ludwigs Take Two - Need Opinions on this kit Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Well the last set of Ludwigs I posted didn't work out. I found another set, but it looks like a rewrap Frankenstein kit but I dont really know. These are the issues I spotted.

1- Floor toms are missing lower hoops. I requested pictures to see if the bearing edges are damaged. I assume not having a lower hoop can cause the drum to warp but I am not sure.

2 - Mounted toms have the lower hoops but from the picture it looks like they have been repainted inside to black. Appears no heads were used on the bass drum toms and floor toms. I assume because the other mounted toms are concert toms.

3 - Left side mounted tom has lrod and bracket mount. Leads me to believe the lrod was added later.

4- Wrap doesnt look original. I didnt see anything that was close to this except Marine White but these look silver and the pattern looks different.

Here are the pics I received today.

hrm.....

the black interiors are suspect for sure AFAIK that was never offered by Ludwig.

Looks like they have cut off flesh hoops between the rim and shell. If so those edges "should" be ok.

If you're looking for a strictly player kit and its cheap, go for it as you could always recut the edges.

If you're looking for a "correct" kit or if its the same price as a correct kit....keep looking

Yeah, I think the mounted toms with the hoops should be ok. If you look at the first picture, you can see the two floor toms at the bottom with no hoops on them. Those are the ones I worry about.

I am looking for a player kit, but I dont want junk either. The kit is not cheap - $989 for 9 piece shell pack but that includes shipping.

wrap is original and it is not that common sky blue pearl I love the stuff and I could care less about the black paint as long as the rearing edges are good the rest is a easy fix... and the price is not that bad negotiate

Wow, I googled the blue sky pearl and there it is. It didnt look like the finish pics in the old catalog photos. Thanks Mike T! So if the bearing edges are toast on the lower toms, how much does it cost to re-cut them? Is the bearing edge critical on the resonate head if there are some minor dings? I dont care about the paint at all either.

if it is just minor stuff you can rub wax around the edge filling in any little spots otherwise they will be fine unless a hunk is missing....

Do you think the kit is original or two kits brought together over time? I haven't seen concert toms mixed with traditional toms like this before. Was this a standard practice back in the 70's?

Yes, it's possible this was always one kit. Mega-kits were all the rage in the 70's. Huge stage kits abounded. If the price is right, this looks like an original 70's Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl kit that has faded to a beautiful grey/silver. Those are probably 3-ply maple shells in there, look for reinforcement rings. If so,

buy, buy, buy!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The mounted tom is definitely 3ply because you can see the ring at the bottom near the hoop. I am waiting on pics on the bottom of the floor toms. Is there anyone here that does bearing edges and hardware installs? If I get these, I would like to get the two larger concert toms converted.

Pretty easy to do. Bearing edges are already there. Source hardware, drill and mount..........
