Or what ever your interpretation of the title is.

Can someone identify the drum set Ron Bushy is playing on this epic first "Heavy Metal" song?

Man this brings back memories. flower

If I am not mistaken, I believe he played an acrylic set. One, if not the first to have done so. I think he built it.

I believe it was a Pearl kit, which would have been pretty 'cheap' back in the day.

Looks acrylic to me........

You can see the player side rims through the shells of the ride toms.

"He built his own plexi glass acrylic drum set and it is thought to be the first one built using plexi glass acrylic.[citation needed] It has a number of butterfly picture cut-outs taped to it. The bass drum is twice the depth of a normal bass drum, so it pushes a longer column of air. The air column was so strong that when miking the bass drum, small sandbag weights were used to keep the air column from pushing over the microphone."

Then there's this:

"RB: I had a mish mash of drums. When we recorded “Vida,” I had a very cheap Pearl drum set. It was only three ply, really thin. So what I did was I took the bottom heads off and coated the inside with white fiberglass, putting the mesh in the empty holes that were there when I removed the bottom head and hardware."

It seems RB invented the Black Dot heads back in the day.

That's a cool story thanks for posting it. I was big into IB back then as many were. For a while it was "the" rock solo to play. LOL. And very interesting how he made the dot heads too.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

I was at the Fillmore East, when Zep opened for IB.John Henry and Company tore it up,2 encores. There is a story that IB didn't want to take the stage after Zep finished. As good as they were that night, that may be true.

Cool article, I hadn't read that before. I just recall talking with Ron some years ago (we both endorsed Impact drums) and him mentioning that. It stuck with me, because I assumed he'd be playing a US kit. Japanese drums weren't very prevalent among pros prior to 1970 or so.

Here is another video of Ron playing on another kit that is definitely acrylic.

Actually not a bad tune either.
