@JRichard - so he should not have bought it to preserve some sort of market integrity?

Also, I understand this happened a while ago so the fuse must be very long because I'm not seeing an explosion of vintage Ludwig prices. With all due respect i think "poisoning the waters" is over-stating your point somewhat.

I don't think the 7K transaction will affect prices, as it was not a public sale like what we see on ebay. Anyone who knows about it from this forum knows that it was an extreme example that won't happen twice.

If anything, the 3K snare on ebay actually brought prices of Ludwig Oyster Blue snares down. Before that auction, the typical Oyster Blue Jazz Fest was bringing around $1500 - $2000, but they surfaced infrequently. After the 3K auction, they started coming out of the woodwork, presumably because people wanted to cash in on their now 3K Jazz Fest. This of course flooded the market, supply went up and demand went down, and the price of a Ludwig Oyster Blue Jazz Fest dropped considerably.

This one recently ended at $920, which seems to be about where they have stabilized (a few went for even less in past months). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1966-Ludwig-Jazz-Festival-snare-Blue-Oyster-Pearl-/260944199562?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc17c7f8a

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks Bill.

That's a great reminder that the prices which things go for has lots of factors involved, and the outcome of a new high is not always what we might think at first blush. An unusually high price influences both supply and demand in complex ways. And yes, prices bounce around a lot so you need enough data in order to get stable estimates.

I'm sorry if my opinion of this purchase poop-poo's the party. I feel it was foolish for him to trade (a complete and intact snare) and spend additional money to acquire another (which has been pointed out incomplete) all because the wrap didn't line up or some such thing.

I do appreciate his wanting his dream kit, I really do, we all have that in us, but my god man, in this economy to spend that kind of money, $7,000, when people are loosing their homes and jobs, parents often can't afford to feed their children and veterans are homeless. I feel it was ludicrous for him, or anyone else to spend that kind of money on any one thing, especially a drum!

I wish you the best of luck with your dream kit, and I do sincerely hope you won't be put in a situation where you'll be forced to sell the kit for far less than what you have invested into it, that would be heartbreaking. I'd also get it insured.

Pompous? Maybe I come off that way, it's not my intention. When I see people doing what most of us feel are ridiculous or foolish, I'm not the least bit shy about saying so. Sorry if someone being honest about a situation by calling a spade a spade upsets the status quo. No one has to like my opinions anymore than I have to like anyone else's opinion.

I will continue to offer help and advice on solutions to various problems and issues that people bring to the table. I will also continue to give my opinion of situations and items, when someone holds up a dead cat and says, "Isn't this the most amazing thing you've ever seen!" and everyone applauds and smiles, I'm going to look at it and say, "No, it's not. it's a dead cat you fool."

Peace!

Yeah, but maybe you're just seeing the dead cat....and not his diamond collar! Mister T

I don't think anyone said anything about this sale starting a "trend". The guy was merely explaining the details of the transaction to clarify. Certainly, nobody wants to be thought of as a fool...but thinking it is one thing....

I'm smiling because it merely exemplifies what I've been saying for years....that is, "value" is as unique as "desire".
