I have an Aquarian vintage head on my Ludwig floor tom. Very nice tone!
That's a beautiful kit that will only get better over time. Nice Score!
The Tama/Camco (Hoshino) LA's actually had six-ply Keller Maple shells not birch. I know, I own them!
The Keller Maple shells were part of Tama's plan to "match" American quality for marketing purposes to professionals. They were made in bop sizes, one of the reasons Elvin Jones was contracted in 1978 for commercial advertising of the Hoshino/Camco drums. For two years this was Tama's "High-end" line of drums. After this, Tama adopted the Camco bop sizes for their "Swingstar" line of jazz kits. Very Cool history...
"Tama integrated all the engineering from Camco into their production process and the overall level of quality of their drums increased virtually overnight. The original plan was to market the low-end Tama drums to beginners and use the Camco brand to sell high-end drums to professional musicians. However, even the professionals were starting to use the Tama drums because the low cost of the Asian-made drums with the (now) high quality of hardware was a great combination." Harry Cangany
