It's okay, Stu!!! I will help you learn about bacon, both streaky and properly cut. Maybe you'll learn about drums from me, as well.

Felt strips are okay for recording, but the bacon works so much better for live gigs. First, you have to actually precook the bacon slightly, joining all the ends of 4 strips together into one long, 20" strip (5 strips for a 24" bass). The resulting 20" bacon strip should be limp and flexible, and still have 80% of its original fat left in it. Now stretch this precooked strip off-center inside the batter head, just as you would do with a felt strip. Now as you play live, the heat from the stage lighting actually heats the air inside your bass, slow-cooking and contracting the bacon strip. Not only will the strip adhere perfectly against your batter head, but the resulting dripping grease will provide additional damping. An unintended benefit from this method is that smell of your bass will make your audience become subliminally thirsty which will please the bar owner to no end.

To give proper credit, I first got this idea from a friend who tried, quite unsuccessfully, to dampen his batter head with large slices of lean, roast beef. Roast beef... what an idiot.

I use nothing in the bass drum, I let my heads do the work.

The heads i use are Aquarian sk 1 2 3 or for the deeper sound imp 1 2 3 batter. For the reso i use the regulator series. these heads are pre muffled and there is no need to add anything more and if you did you would kill the bottom end sound. Bunny brother being that i'm canadian i should be sticking BACON! in the bass to get that canadian bass drum sound.

Glad I could amuse. Bit of a ramble but I've got two Guiness in me.

My original answer was going to be "felt", original, factory-installed Rogers felt. The bass of the Rogers set I bought new in 1974 is relatively unused, still has the original resonant and batter heads on it, and has never been opened. Factory fresh felt!
