While at a local drumshop the other day looking for parts, I find that the pioneer of the shop had recently accquired some old marching snares. Do I want to see them? Sure, why not.
Long story short....
I came out with a '55-'59 WFL, 2x '61-'63 pre-serial number Ludwigs, and 4
'65 Ludwigs. All 14". All for $200. I'm sitting on 2 pairs of brass hoops, several strainers, 48 bowtie lugs..... I'm pretty pumped!

No.......you overpaid
marching snare drums can be great. all of those are from a wonderful era. as far as parts, its easy to calculate the savings. a pair of nice cob hoops can run up to 100 bucks. lugs are usually 5 or so each. p83 strainers can be 50-75 bucks each. if it has original heads that are nice, plenty of people love those. complete mufflers are selling for 50 ish these days. original wires 20 or so.
and as a total, 7 drums for 200 bucks. what a steal. what colors are they?

I'm a little concerned that you're looking at it in terms of parts, though. Steam those re-rings off, cut down the shells, and make some killer snares!
I walked into an antique store while on tour once. BAM!!! Right there in the front was an entire battery of marching drums. I'm talking 32" bass drums down to 16" bass drums. At least 30 marching snares--no joke! All had WFL and earlier badges. Some cloud badge Slingerlands, some Leedys, you get the point. All painted and part of the local Police Station marching band. (No cymbals, though. I asked. Evidently they sold all of the cymbals. Some guy wanted them because they said "K" on them or something. They weren't even made in the U.S.A.! They sold for about $30-50 a piece because they were old and dusty...) The shop owner took it upon himself to clean each of the drums, and was selling them for...are you ready?...$800-$1200 EACH! I mean, c'mon, those old marching snares are antiques from, like, the Civil War or something, right?

Yes! I had heard you could steam rings off. I would totally do that. I thought about getting some blank 3-ply shells and using the hardware to make snares. But using the old 3-plies with the original lug holes would be killer.
